If I ever draw a tag.....

If I ever draw a tag I'll be taking my .338 Winchester. I've got three bonus points this year so my odds are going up.....little by little. I would take the .338 just because I've got it and it doesn't get enough "exercise" on elk lately. The .280 Rem or .308 would probably be plenty at the yardages I'd be shooting at. NH ain't no tundra.

I've hunted them with a .300 Savage, 30-06, .338WinMag and .450 Marlin. In Alaska the .338 seems to be pretty popular.

Everything worked just fine. I was using the factory load at the time....the 350 gr. Hornady. It broke a rib on the way in, made jello of the lungs, broke a rib on the far side and stopped under the hide. The distance was 248 yards which I would consider the very upper limit for the .450M...... but I shoot it a lot and am very familiar with its capabilities. My buddy was standing by with his .338WM, but it wasn't needed.

Incidentally, I also shot a kudu in Namibia with the .450M and had the same result. The bullet penetrated through to the far side and stopped under the hide. That shot was from only 40 yards though!

I've taken all mine with my 7mm Rem Mag and found it to be more than adequate. However, guys in the gang have taken them with the '06 and I do admit the 30 cals are more efficient.
