Where we live is a shotgun only zone. Therfore, most of our deer are shot with a bow or shotgun.

My wife and daughter use 20 gauge shotguns.

My son and I use 12 gauge shotguns.

A shotgun slug does a great job at 100 yards or less.

FAV CAL. FOR WHITETAILS?

All of these calibers that you guys have mentioned are all a matter of opinion. Whitetail deer are not hard at all to take down but, really and truly any caliber is sufficient with proper bullet selection and the infamous bullet placement. OK i'll go ahead and cut to the chase. 30-06 hands down for the simple fact that recoil is managable and the .06 can take bear sized game with no trouble. Also ammo is fairly cheap(remington core lokt) and thats all I shoot 150gr and deer has never taken one step after being introduced to the deadliest mushroom in the woods.Thx fellas keep'em coming.

For the way that I hunt, in the places I hunt and if I knew for absolute sure that I would only ever hunt deer...

30/30

But since I also hunt moose and bear occassionally and can only afford one rifle I shoot a .308.

FAV CAL. FOR WHITETAILS?

For me 308 Win 150 grain federal power shok in a TC Encore for MN hunting and 7mm STW 140 grain core lokt or a-frame in a Winchester Model 70 for the open plains and hills out west. Also have taken with a 243 Win and a 223 Rem and .50 cal ML and 12 ga slug. Never had any issues with any.
