fall turkeys...an excuse to scout deer
In the Black Hills where I hunt, turkey season starts the begining of October. Our Deer season starts on November 1st. I use my fall turkey hunting to scout for deer. It's the best excuse to be in the woods at that time of the year. Our merriam turkeys flock up about that time and we are allowed to take hens in the fall. We use a spot and stalk variation of hunting. While checking for deer sign, we carry 22 rifles with us. When we spot a flock, we will stalk up on them.
Last year while stalking a small flock on a ridge that they ran up, I walked into a small herd of 8 deer, one of them a very respectable buck. As I watched the deer scatter, the flock of turkeys lost track of me. I spotted them hiding in downed trees. I calmly waited until they busted out of the wood pile and shot a nice hen at about 20 yards, hitting it in the back of the head. Not a bad meal for a day of deer scouting.

In Kansas we hunt them the same time we hunt deer in Archery season. We get quite a few walking under the stand. Heres a Pic. of one I got. Not the biggest but he had 2 beards and 23lbs.

My season already ended and I never even made it to the sporting goods store to pick up a tag It was just way to busy around here to get out to chase the big birds. It sounds like the California(or atleast part of the state) season is coming up here in about a week. So good luck to all of you Californians that will be chasing gobblers!

We don't have a fall season
We don't have a fall season but these turkeys must know that because they were feeding directly behind my truck when I out of the woods this am.
