Escalante Canyon Rd, CO, Unit 62

My hunting group plans on using Escalante Canyon Rd,(500), (36 4/10 Rd) to get into the Uncompahgre and set up camp for 2nd rifle season in unit 62. I was wondering if anyone has used this road and knows if it will handle a 2 wheel drive truck and trailer. The topo and satellite maps don't look too bad, but there seems there could be a washout or two . Anyone used that road?

The truck yes. Probably not the trailer.
Some narrow spots, tight turns, some serious erosion in places.
I'll look for a photo to post.
My suburban 4x4 barely made it in perfect dry conditions.

I didn't have any good photos of the road itself.
It has some 18" to 24" deep washouts that you can stradle or somehow negotiate - but I don't think with a trailer.

This is Escalante Canyon from atop Love Mesa looking North.

This is 17 miles in. 20 miles to go. This is the beginning of the worst part.

These Hoodoos are pretty cool.

Do you think that going as far as the national forest boundary would be OK? I guess that is where the picture of the sign is at that you posted. We thought we would actually hunt in the area of the forest boundary, but i'm not sure now looking at the pictures.

I drove the road only 1 time. I really don't trust my recollection enough to answer for sure on that. Sorry.

The Escalante Rd they have repaired since the bad rains in archery season, but I would not plan on taking your 2-wheel drive truck and trailer up Love Mesa or Palmer. Once you get on top and you have any weather unless you have 33 inch tires or bigger when it rains and snows you can not make it through the ruts if you are hunting the lower country.

I hunted with my boys all archery season up there and just returned early from first rifle season ( I did not see one elk during first rifle). Absolutely one of the worst years for elk I have ever seen on the Uncompahgre Plateau in my entire life up there. We had eleven tags total and did not feel one, yet( the rest of my crew is still hunting right now so hopefully something happens). Brick Wall,) Normally we fill better than half the tags every year.

I am not trying to discourage anyone just letting you know what is going on this year on the Plateau.

Good luck and good hunting to all!
