I agree with holding up your end in equality. The fact is. No one is equal and there are times when we could, all of us, use a little help and consideration.

This world has bred a couple of generations now that just "want it all". I think everyone should chase a dream or work towards a goal. But, one certainty I've learned in life is that NO ONE can have it all. You gotta sacrifice one thing for another. Life is full of trade-offs and comprimises. That goes for everything, family, career, money, equality, and so on. You gotta give up something.

I believe there should be equal rights for men & women. I'm talking about basic rights, like voting, etc., However when it comes to "equality" in a relationship, I'm not sure that can ever be 100% equal. In most relationships we'd like to think that all will be equal, but its not. We all assume our roles and hope it somehow equals out in the end.

I'm not sure any man should HAVE to sacrifice himself for a woman, however most of us are willing to sacrifice ourselves for someone we love, whether it be for a woman, man or child. So I would say a lot depends on the relationship. Would my husband sacrifice himself for a stranger (man or woman), probably not? Would he sacrifice himself for me or one of our children? Knowing him, I would say definitely yes.

Now about the disaster you described where more men than women survived, without knowing the details, its hard to know why it was lopsided. Did more men have life jackets? Did less women know how to swim? Did the women have children they were trying to rescue and protect? Most women will instinctively protect their children, regardless of whether it puts their own life at risk. Its not fair to immediately assume that the women were weaker.

While its nice to discuss how norms have changed over the years, personally I don't think chivalry has anything to do with equality.

Then again, if I find myself sinking in the north Atlantic with rosie, jane fonda, or similar figures, I doubt I'd be dawning the white knight garb either.... I would probably play them some taps though.

That North Atlantic is very cold water gentlemen . The nearest island is Newfoundland. Do yourself a favor and go moose hunting. The girls will just laugh when you get out of the water
