Elk Wallows

I was hunting an area this morning that I'm moderately familiar with (I don't get lost there, that is). I came across a marshy area where several bulls had been wallowing in the mud. Looked like a lot of activity in that area. Is there a general time of day the an elk would come wallow? Doesn't seem like a middle-of-the-night sort of activity. I wouldn't mind catching one of the stinky things there and put an arrow in him, but I've never hunted a wallow area before.

Elk Wallows

It's hard to say what time is going to be best but I would think a hot wallow has activity all day long. When it's hot out, they like to get in there and cool off, plus get stinky. I have friends who do quite well hunting hot wallows out of a tree stand. Is there any big trees nearby that you can hang a stand?

Elk Wallows

I thought about the tree stand idea. There really aren't any good trees for that in the area. they're mostly smallish spruces. I might be able to sit in some cover and ambush them on the way to the wallow... that is if I knew when they'd be there. Next weekend I'm going to try that in the evening.
