Don't worry its all good, rather it be your opinion, your personal experiance or fact. Cumminication is key. I was just trying to key in on the opertunity side of the discusion.

One good thing with the OTC archery elk tag is you can pick which week you want to go in september. I'm now thinking I just might have to go hunt the last two weeks of the season. Big smile

Re: Elk rut and the Moon

my time would be a new moon.
when its dark out the elk will and have always
been more active in the early mornings and late evening.
If there is a full moon they play and chase each other all night and sleep all day.

Elk rut and the moon

If you can do a little walking around night time on the roads if you have some where you are hunting. When you get away from camp you can find them bugling at night and get a location on them for the next day

Dont worry about it.

I try not to worry about it myself. I have tried to plan many hunting and fishing trips around the moon phase and have been rewared and disappointed during new moon and full moons. I think we over think it alot of times, atleast I do personally. It sounds like you know the pattern they do during the full moon so setup early and take advantage of knowing exactly where to be a when to be there.

Re: Elk rut and the Moon

I've never hunted Colorado, but frankly here when the rut is in swing I don't notice any real difference. Seems some satilite bull always trying to spin off a cow and the main guy keeping 'em moving or something going on, never letting them rest, LOL. Our hunts during the rut are shorter too however, and we don't have much choice anyway. Never took exact notes though either, but seems to me the effect is more prevelent in non-rut hunts if anything to me.

Good luck.

Same

That's what I have noticed as well. If the rut isn't going on then it tends to freak me out a little more on a full moon. I notice the same with deer. They all become night critters and alot harder to hunt, but even then you still can somewhat pattern them if you have done your homework of the area.

Elk Rut during the full moon

The only diffrence while hunting the full moon is the time the elk go to bed. They usually go to their bedding areas alot earlier but may start rutting again towards the middle of the day or late afternoon. I have killed many bulls in that 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm time range including my biggest bull (350 p&y)that I called in at 3:00pm. You need to follow them to their beds and play the waiting game until the wind currents change expecially in the high country of Colorado. Good luck on your hunt.
