Elk - Mt. Zirkel W.A.

Anybody hunt elk in and around the Mt. Zirkel Wilderness area near Clark, Colorado Lately? Its GMU 14. I haven't been there for over 15 years. I was going to setup base in Diamond Park and Bivouac from there.

Fairly familiar with the area, although I haven't hunted it. Your plan might work during the early rifle seasons; however the elevation seems a bit high for late season hunting.

I hunted that area in 2002 and 2003. Nice area. Elevation around 9000 feet. The fire is east of Clark. Parts of seedhouse rd. and usfs rd 443 are closed. The fire was roughly 350 acres. There was a big burn back in 2002. Check with DOW for more info.

Paul,
I have a place up by there and you are right that was the old burn. The new one was only 350 or so acres. Sorry to hear about your bull and the stolen quarters.
Good Hunting,
Jeff

Hey Jeff. How does it look out there for the upcoming 1st elk season? I will be in Steamboat on the 13th. We hunt just east of Clark. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Happy Hunting. Thumbs up

FDHunter,
I haven't been up there since the 4th of July. We are planning on Deer hunting in unit 14 in the 3rd Season. Nov. 5-11 and I'll know more after that. I had a friend shoot a bull with his Bow last week by Priest Creek. The old burn area up on Zirkel is a good area and should hold elk. Good hunting. Jeff

Thanks Jeff. Good luck this upcoming season. Two years ago I saw the largest mule beer buck in the hole in the wall canyon area. It's in 14. Go get him.

Jeff,
Thanks for the update on the Seedhouse Rd area. Been about 6 years since I hunted in the area with my Dad. Things seemed quiet then - wasn't sure if the herds were effected by the blowdown, if the coyote population was scaring out game, or just bad luck/timing on our part.

Going back up there 3rd combined next month with an OTC bull and a draw buck... and Dads ashes.. he loved Diamond Park. Is the jeep road still open to Diamond? Are the coyote's really taking off there, or was I just (un)fortunate enough to be hunting where they seemed to be (saw lots of coyote track)? Do you think the blowdown changed migration routes for a few years... or even still today?

See ya up there, perhaps. Good luck.
