Elk loads

I got invited by a friend of a friend on a elk hunt. I hunt deer with a Lyman 50. cal cap lock mz 70 grains of FFFG powder and a patched round ball. I'm thinking of using a conical bullet but the load instructions that came witth the rifle said that 70 grains is the max to use of FFFG powder. Any body got advice? thanks.

Hello from Germany!

Please tell me what Lyman rifle it is exactly, traderifle, GPR or normal Hawken?
I think for elk a conical will be better than a PRB, because you can shoot at longer distance with more energy. All Lyman rifles are normaly constructed for higher loads. Here in Germany you are allowed to use 123 grs of bp together with a conical in a cal.50 ML. All rifles traded in GE must stand these load. So while the Lyman rifles are from Italy (Investarm) and traded here in GE, they will stand the pressure.

It's a trade rifle 1:48 twist. What grain of powder do you shoot? and is it black powder or a substitute?

I have the Investarm/Lyman Hawken. It's the same as the traderifle, only with a brass patch box and mine is a flinter in .54. But I have also a .50 Deerhunter from Traditions. I shoot it with 90 grs WANO PP (like FFg), but had it also tested with 120 grs, all with PRB. Using conicals I took a charge of 90 grs WANO PP. Both worked well and without any trouble. So I would recommend 90 -100 grains and a Hornady Great Plains bullet 385grs. That will have enough energy to bring an elk down up to 100 yds. Remember shotplacement is more necessary than energy.
