Elk Ivory

Can anyone describe for me where in an elk's mouth the ivories are located (I know they are teeth)? Also - I've been seeing that people make jewelery out of them...what else do people do with them?
Are elk the only north american animal that have ivory?

it's the elk's canine teeth. i believe they're usually located on the top and there should be one on each side.

I'm not much for jewelry except for my mwife- so I throw them in a draw along wih some used bullets etc- also give them away to kids or used to make necklaces for firends and kids- ditto bear claws and teeth.

hellomcfly is right...they're on the top, around 3-4" back from the front teeth. Cows buglers are smaller than bulls but they both have them.

Jewelry is the most common use for them. Indians like to wear them, especially the ladies. They wore them as necklaces, beads, earrings, rings and I once saw a dress with close to a 1,000 elk ivories on it. I have also seen mens rings, made out of them.

I keep mine with hopes to use them someday for something like jewelry. I have a bollo tie that a friend made me. It has bear claws, torquios with silver and gold and at the bottom of the strings are elk ivories. I have always wanted to have a bear claw necklace with elk ivories throughout. I have enough bear claws and close to enough ivories saved up to have it made, now I just need to save the cash to hire a good silversmith/jeweler to get it made.

Thank you for all the great info...I really like the ideas of decorating clothing with them...I'll have to keep thinking about it.

These are big value

among the many tribes. Women use them on their wing dresses, and used for jewelry, men use them for necklaces and various other things for regalia. If ya dont want them, send them to me I'll even pay for shipping/handling

there are many jewelers that will turn them into something for you or your wife.

my wife had a nice necklace and earings made in jackson a few years back, dang things cost as much as the hunt did. lol. i can post pics if you want and steer you to at least one jeweler in jackson....

Thanks but no thanks and i hope my wife doesn't read your post--I'll save me money for another hunt or trip with wife across the pond. Shae actually doesn't care much for Elk jewelry- when I was teaching a few years ago i took several classes in jewelry making and made some gold nugget stuff as well as mounting bear claws and elk ivoery in pendants etc.

well in case you change your mind, or your wife does, this is the guy that made a couple necklaces and earings for us, first rate job. as my father always said, with wine, cars and hookers..you get what you pay for..you can add jewelers to that i guess
