Elk hunting Unit 76 Colorado

I don't think the Wheeler Monument itself is worth hunting, but certainly Wason Park to the west and Silver Park to the east are worth hunting. It's a good 4-5 mile hike in there, and a 3,000 foot elevation gain from the Bellows Creek area. It's a great area if the elk are unpressured, but there isn't a lot of cover to hold pressured elk. I've never hunted 76, but to my mind, they give out a surprisingly large number of tags for a trophy hunt (when you include cow hunters), so you still to make an effort to get away from the roads..

Thanks for that info. I was also wondering if anyone in that 1st. season had any luck with catching the end of the rut.

I've never hunted that unit, but usually where you find unpressured elk they are usually still bugling during first rifle season.

A group of four of us are applying for unit 76, 1st. season rifle. So far we're thinking about going to the wheeler geologic area. Does anyone have an opinion on this!

I hunted the southern portion of GU 68 during the 2007 2nd rifle season. I came in through GU 76 from Hansen's Saw Mill to the Wheeler Monument area. I then humped it over Half Moon Pass and primitive camped in the La Garita Wilderness area. Fortunately the weather held out that year. Very cold nights but no snow. I saw lots of cows all along the GU 76/68 boundary along with several nice bulls. Lots of ATV's and trucks loaded with hunters where running up and down the Wheeler Monument access road and pushed the elk out of there. When the elk get pressured it seems like they began moving South out of the area. Get off the road at least a mile and you should see some elk. If the weather is still mild hunt along the timberline.

If I don't draw any of the limited elk hunts I put in for I just may hunt that area again this season. Thumbs up
