Big score! I just drew my first colorado elk license for Unit 56 in the Nov.5 -13 season. Any advice from all you veterans out there on Unit 56, or just hunting late season bull elk in general? I appreciate all the help!
3rd season is traditionally one of the toughest seasons to elk hunt. Thats a good unit, but it's big country with several 14ers. You can actually use that to your advantage somewhat, as the the elk shouldn't be too high in the drainages during 3rd season, making them a little easier to get to. And pray for snow, but not too much.
One of the things I struggle with when afield is keeping my rifle clean and in good working order. Small amounts of dust and dirt collect moisture; moisture can freeze rendering your action immovable when you need it most. I have seen this happen on multiple occasions, and over time, I’ve learned the cause and how to prevent this from happening.
The first thing that you need to avoid before going afield is leaving excess oil on the gun. Oil will trap dirt and sand in all the wrong places....
