Elk hunting Colorado Unit 77

My dad and I are looking to go to this unit 2nd rifle season. We normally put in for cows because we are non-residents, its cheaper, and we care more to hunt for meat than antlers.

Just looking for any good ideas or places to look at in this unit and really what is the best way to hunt for cow elk.

The clear cuts around Graham Peak and the North and Souh Forks of Sand Creek hold elk but there are too many roads, the elk will be scattered out of those during first season. You are hunting one of the most difficult seasons, so you are going to really have to hump it into some holes to get into the elk havens. The roads peter out on Rock Cliff Mesa, so you can try getting to the end of the road and hunting in from there. There are numerous small openings to catch elk feeding or fleeing, and plenty of timber to still-hunt during midday. 77 has too many roads for my liking, but Rock Cliff Mesa and Middle Mountain offer an opportunity to get into some elk without rubbing shoulders with others. I've never hunted it, but I imagine that the First Fork of the Piedra where Trout, Red and Char Creek converge might also get you into some elk.
I wouldn't hunt the wilderness here, the obvious meadows are too close to the boundary.

I did notice the huge increase of hunters for that second season, so it would be tougher to get animals. We are hoping to get off the beaten path a ways, to try and get away from the rest of the hunters.

The license we are applying for encompasses 77,78, and 771. Do you recommend any of those areas?

Also, during 2nd rifle, does any calling help? I know they aren't bugling at that time but do any elk respond to cow calls or anything like that?

The occasional cow call is often used to mask the noise you are making while tromping around the timber. Elk generally won't respond to calling by second season, but it could happen. More than likely the elk you see will be pressured elk and if they hear you calling, they will run the other way. You would be much better off applying for first, third or fourth season if you don't want to lock elbows with all the elk hunters in Texas.
