Elk hunting in Alberta

I am a new resident in Alberta and an inexperienced elk hunter to boot. I have done some whitetail hunting in Saskatchewan and have bagged a bull moose in northern Saskatchewan a couple of years ago but have been told that elk are much different to hunt. My son and I just spent 4 days in zones 326 and 328 and did not even see an elk, we saw some sign but not recent.

Any tips on places to aquire good information would be very much appreciated.

I was told by a local that elk are few and far between in the zones along the foothills due to significant loss to wolves. Does anyone know if this is true?
