OK I went out this morning at about 5 am and sat in the junction of two big basins waiting to hear some bugles and start a hunt,two hours later i hadnt heard a peep so I decided to head home and wait for the evening,on the way home I took a roundabout way just to do some driving and as I came out at the highway I pulled over at the BMA sign in box to take a look at the map they had posted there showing the areas of private land open for hunting,as I was looking at the sign sitting in my truck I noticed movment on the hillside above the sign,there sat a 3 point bull and 9 cows!!They were just sitting up on this ridge staring at me and I couldt figure out why they didnt take off,as I sat there watching them with the binocs trying to figure out if there was any way i could make a stalk on them I heard somtning from the other side of the truck and there stood a calf elk anbout 20 yards away trying to get through the fence that surrounded the alfalfa field they had just left.I watched that calf for 1/2 hour waiting to see what it would do as it ran down the fence line,it ran down that fence for 20 mins trying to find a place to get through in a panic,I followed it down to the end of the field where there was a corner in the fence.I finally relized this was a legal elk sitting right next to the road and it didnt look like he was going to far,the calf was running back and forth in the corner so I eased out of the truck with my bow and got in a ditch and headed his way,I came to the end of the ditch about 60 yards away from the corner the elk was in and came over the top trying to get a shot,the calf looked over his shoulder and saw me and in one matrix like movement cleared the fence and the one opposite it like he was an olympic longjumper,30 mins of panic ended by a nanosecond of seeing me....he headed off towards the herd at light speed and never looked back.LOL In the morning Ill be sitting i that coulee waiting for them to leave the field,I wonder what they will come up with this time?
