Elk in Estes Park

I know there have been a few videos posted before about Estes Park, but I can't always view them if they are on Youtube.  Apologies if this link was already posted.

I love going to Estes park, but I have only been a few times in the spring.  Elk are around, but obviously alot different situation then the rut in the fall.  Wish I could see them then.

I've seen the videos, and I

I've seen the videos, and I think I posted one here. I can't watch them anymore. It upsets me to see elk acting so stupid. I'd rather think of elk as being wild with all their senses going 100%, and hard to get near them.

Fishing & Elk in Estes Park

Yep, that's Estes Park alright.  A few years ago (well, about 6 or 7 years ago probably) my son and I were fishing in Lake Estes right by the power plant at the Southern inlet of the reservoir.  It was the middle of September in the afternoon.  We noticed a group of elk begin to wander and make their way directly toward us.  Turns out it was a herd of about 50 elk and they all decided to cross the lake right where we were fishing.  My son was about 5 or 6 and still talks about how the elk came and walked right by us, bugling, cow talking, the whole 9 yards.  It was spectacular!  After about 15-20 minutes they had made their way across the lake and onto the city golf course to feed and bed down.

In the elk world, they're probably the snobby country club elk.  I doubt they mingle much with the elk outside of town.  But they're still elk and they are a truly spectacular animal.

The fishing wasn't too bad either...I think.  I can visualize the elk like it was yesterday, but I couldn't for the life of me tell you how many fish we caught or big they were.

disappointing visit

We went to RMNP on Sunday expecting to see "the elk".  We went to Horseshoe and Moraine parks and there were high fences everywhere and very, very few elk...as in 6 cows and one bull (a 15 minute line to drive by them) and we stayed till dusk.  Nothing like years past.  I guess the NPS is trying to curtail the damage the elk are dong to the willows and aspen trees by fencing them off.  I understand the intent of the fences but think there are better ways to achieve a goal than completely ruin the natural setting.

You'd swear the elk

You'd swear the elk population is low this year, but the DOW says it's higher than ever. Where are they hiding? I got lucky and got mine this year, but I sure didn't see very many.

Samson was the Estes "Mascot"

Samson was a very large bull elk that was kind of adopted as the mascot of Estes Park.  Many years ago some idiot shot him with a crossbow.  He was caught, don't remember exactly what happened to him, but as far as the public was concerned it wasn't harsh enough.  So the state lawmakers decided to make a new anti-poaching law aimed specifically at poachers of trophy class animals.  The law is now referred to as Samson's law.

I remember the whole Samson

I remember the whole Samson deal and it was pretty sad. Same thing happend last year as someone put an arrow into the big boy that was hanging around town and the lake. I think it was DOW that had to finally put him down. Not sure if they caught that jerk. My wife and daughter went up to hear the elk bugle in mid September. We avoid the Estes side due to the crowds and stay on the west or Grand Lake side. They saw allot of elk but the bugling was just starting. She also saw 13 moose in two days and several deer. Last time I was over on the east side it was sad to see the fences and I asked a ranger. He said it was to get the elk to move and not destroy an area as there are to many elk in the park. Best solution is let hunters thin the heard but the huggers said no so the park service hired so called professional marksmen. The state and park service could make money on this deal but decided to spend our tax money. Result is the same, dead elk. Still a great place to go and see elk in the mountains.
