have you guys ever use a elk decoy while hunting?
just got my income tax check and thinking about things i need for this upcoming elk hunt.
going bow hunting in co.
should i buy on off ebay?
whats the best style?
montana decoys, there light wieght and do the job. just go to the local sporting good store, the price's on ebay aren't that impresive, after the price and shipping price its the same as you would spend at a local sporting goods store, and you dont have to wait the 5 days it takes to get deliverd.
I don't know what would work for you, but I use two of them, one with the cow looking back, and the one with just the rear-end., I suggest putting weights in the bottom of legs, and adding a loop to hang from a branch (or whatever), it provides some movement in the wind and adds realism....
I also dont know if it makes a difference, but I hung mine outside for a few days and treated them with UV blocker also.
Do you sit next to the decoy or what?
I just checked ebay and there is an elk decoy called instant elk,
looks cool at least there is a bunch of shapes
he said on there do not sit by it.
or hold it.
Bow hunting is up close and personal do you think someone might shoot at it?
I'll keep you posted,
20 weeks and counting down.
no dont sit bye it, keep it behind you and well off to one side if you got a bull coming into your decoy you'll get busted sitting next to it. keep it about 20-30 yards behind you and the same distance to eather side depens on the wind, when he makes his way to the decoy he will be focused on it and not you, and it will provide you with a better shot. never herd of the decoy you mentiond. this usually work great with a partner. on my freind's utah elk hunt he got posted up in some thick sage on the edge of a draw, i went up the draw 30 yards and set the decoy a "montata dec brodside cow" then sat in the mahogany 10 yards behind the decoy and ran the hochi mama. bull came up the draw payin no mind to jake in the bushes as he drew back . then the rest was a blood trail and a tyering day packin meat. thats another advantage of a partner.
wow that sounded cool.
decoys, well i went into Instant elk decoys on the internet.
and came up with some supper neat decoys.
got one going away profile and one butt and a feeder.
two of my hunting budies are going to pick up a couple also,
this year is arrow time,
know where they sleep know where the feed adn drink, now just put them in our decoys.
There can be too much of a good thing with antler rattling.
I like to hit the horns together for a good 30- to 40-second rattling sequence and then hang them up and resist the urge to hit them again.
This works to the hunter's advantage, because if a buck has heard it, he may have been 300 or 400 yards away and he comes in and he's not exactly sure where it came from.
When finally is time to rattle again throw a slight change-up into the routine.
The second time, don't rattle as loud...
