Elk and seasonal elevations

I'll be hunting the last week of the archery season. I had been looking at entering unit 14 at Buffalo Pass... follow the divide and fall off to the west toward watering areas. I have no problem making a base camp 5 or more miles in, however... That time of year, are the elk still at those elevations. (10,000 feet) I have never hunted elk and want to make sure I'm at least in the right area for the season.

Damn straight there still at that elevation in Sep. Oh, sure you'll find some lower, but most will still like it up in that cool air and with good feed.

I was hoping to hear that... also... will the be calling at that time? I don't care if I fill my tag as much as I want to hear that haunting sound I've heard so much about.

Yes, for the last few years we've found they start getting hot into the rut the last week or two in Sep. thru the first couple of weeks of Oct. here in Southern Colo. If I was an archery hunter I'd rather hit the latter part of Sep. then the early part for this reason.
