Reading the post by Jim Boyd about planning a DIY western hunt, i thought about this magazine and its information on hunt areas, drawing odds, etc. and wondered if anyone subscribes and if it is worth it?
I almost subscribed one time, but you had to pay what I thought was an unreasonable shipping cost for the "free" gift that came with the subscription so I didn't do it.
I don't get this magazine, but I hear good things about it. I think Hawkeye would be interested in the latest issue. Someone in a Nebraska hunting forum that I am a member on posted that their Colorado Moose hunt from 2009 is the featured story this month. A great bull and a great story. I think that guy was either 16 or 18 years waiting for a tag. Unreal.
I subscribe to Eastman's Bowhunting Journal. Each issue has information in the back end about upcoming application periods and preference points. There are always great articles in there as well and most of the hunts involve DIY public land. My buddy gets the EHJ so we swap issues and get the best of both worlds. Worth the money in my book.
I subscribe to both the archery and gun issues. there is a ton of great information in these magazines from tips to tatics. I think the best thing I like about the magazine is the articles are wriiten by alot of just your average trophy hunter on public land doing DIY hunts. I have a buddy that got a deer story published that he shoot with his muzzleloader. I got to read the story before he submitted it and it was the same one ion the magazine, so they did not to try tell him how to tell his story. great magazine...I read them all the time here at work.
I like both the magazines as I subscribe to both. Great information in these magazines. I subscribe to them to find out any little bit of info that will help with future hunts. It difficult for a flatlander from the east to get a hold of info about hunting out west. I think my hunting buddies think I'm crazy for getting on site this for info and subscribing to those magazines, but I can use the info from those magazines to go on DIY hunts every year. Whereas, if I had to hire a guide, I could only go on hunts every 3 or 4 years.
Like the other post, the majority of the hunts are DIY, public land hunts and those articles appeal to me more that a guided hunt. Although there are some hunts that should be guided, such as once in a lifetime tag hunts, I prefer the DIY hunt whether the person is successful at tagging an animal or not. When done by oneself, it is certainly more rewarding in my opinion.
If I didn't know your situation, CVC, I'd say don't be so tight about shipping costs. But I understand, I recently land a job after a year of unemployment. Good luck to you and I hope you find something soon.
I can afford the shipping, but it is just the principle of the situation. I get weird about people/busineses trying to mislead or take advantage of me. Most companies that offer a free gift just send it to you no shipping charge.
If it were a reasonable shipping charge I wouidn't mind, but to get your free DVD you pay 5 bucks for shipping. Please, stick it in the first magazine you receive or send it first class for less than a buck. Don't make money off the free DVD.

I second that. EBay used to be the worst with that. A few years ago you could buy a new cell phone for $1, but then pay $149 for shipping while other people would have the phone listed for $150 with free shipping. Same price, but just a stupid way to do things. I'm glad they changed and I think it's a deceitful way to market products. Then again, $5 for a DVD isn't bad. I enjoy mine! 
It wasnt eBay doing it, it was the sellers who were circumventing the way eBay assessed fees. eBay charged the seller a commission on the final sale price, but nothing on the added shipping costs. So, the seller paid next to nothing for selling the 150 phone since the final sales price was only a dollar.

You are correct. I meant eBay as in the general marketplace. I'm rather familiar with it.
I sure have to be careful with you around...touchy touchy 
It's a tough job, but someone needs to keep an eye on you
