eastern washington help please!!

i have a few questions i am hoping someone can help me with. this coming fall i will be going to CWU in ellensburg. and my grandfather lives near seattle. i am from california so i am not familiar with this area at all. but i have hunted a lot in california and nevada with my dad, so i know quite a bit about hunting deer. i would really like to take my grandfather out hunting with me this year since he used to hunt when he was younger but hanst been in the last few years. its always been a dream of mine to have all three of us go out on a hunting trip together. my grandfather is getting pretty old but he is still in decent shape. i am planning on doing some scouting thuis summer since i will be living in ellensburg. can anyone point me in the right direction? someone was telling me about the wenatchee national forest might be a good area, but im not even really sure where that is. hope someone can give me some ideas of where to start. thanks a ton.

jc3000, you are lucky enough to have chosen a state college in the heart of great deer and elk country. Plan on a bit of competition, steep countryside, arid terrain, long shots up to 300 yards. CWU is windy and cold in the fall and winter. Very Windy. Get used to it my friend.

Private message me and I will give you some great deer areas!

You will be living in a hunting mecca. That stretch of the Yakima River is blue ribbon trout water (though it's catch and release) and arguably the best trout river in the state. There are plenty of deer and elk in the nearby hills along with plenty of grouse. Also nearby is excellent chukar hunting. Enjoy.

Hunting Ellensburg Area

Hello All,
Can anyone point us in a direction where we might have luck in getting an Elk or Deer this year in Ellensburg? Me & the wife have been scouting a lot of areas (Manastash, Cle-Elum) but have ran into a lot of private property and are unsure where we can hunt legally with a decent chance of bagging an Elk or Deer this year. Any info. would be greatly appreciated.

You can find a lot of hunting in unit 340 . State Game Departmant ground as well as National Forest Service . They both have good maps .

iceman -

havent found anyone to go fishing with in ellensburg yet, but i have been going out quite a bit after my classes. im loving it living so close to such a great river and ive been catching some decent fish. nothing special yet just smaller rainbows.

as for hunting my grandfather got sick about a month ago and his health is not doing so well. my dad and i went out hunting but i couldnt talk him into coming over to eastern washington so we headed to some place south of the olympic mountains. opening weekend was lame. we saw a bunch of does but thats about it. then we went out again this weekend and saturday we didnt see anything but does of course. then this morning he dropped my off to sit on a hillside and about 15 minutes later i heard a shot. he comes driving back to pick me up. he ended up shooting a 3x3 around the corner from where he dropped me off. so his tag is filled and im going to try to fill mine still. so im going to go out and hunt evenings all this week near ellensburg probably by myself Cry then im going to try and talk him coming over for the weekend. so thats my story. thanks again for the information you gave earlier this year. i did manage to get some scouting in, hopefully it will pay off this week.

Hey thanks for the reply! We bombed on racked muleys, filled one muley doe tag... No racks for us this year from the east side. I saw lots of spikes and two's, and even a few shooters but could not get in positition for shooting...

We had major wind for most days of our hunt which kept alot of the deer in the thick...

I too will have to try to fill my tag, on the west side with a scrawny blacktail...

The Doe is hanging in cold storage till Sunday, Saturday i will try to add on a blacktail for the cutting party Sunday...

Good luck!

so i didnt realize that eastern washington mulies does not continue until next weekend. since i live in ellensburg that would have been convenient. how far east would i have to go to get into blacktail country?

and how come here is no late season for mule deer?
