Well, walked our feet off (me and my uncle) from Sat. thru Mon. really concentrating on deer but they were few and far between in this arid canyon country. Sat. found some water holes down in the canyon but considered the pack we'd have getting elk outta there but thought deer were more then doable. Started down the canyon trail Monday morning and glassed up some deer on the bottom of the canyon feeding but were leary to keep heading down the trail as they'd hear us. Glassed em for awhile and saw where they were headed and were going to continue down the canyon and move towards em. As Im getting down the trail pass a tree on my left and glance down and there's two spikes feeding below us unawares were in the vicinity. I whisper back to my uncle "ELK" he says "what" I say again "ELK" get set up I open up with the 30-06 pushing 168 Bergers and he opens up with the 25-06 and 70 gr Barnes and we got a raghorn and spike down for the count. Range was 250 yds. We were wearing pack frames got down to dismantling our harvest and pack a hind quarter apiece out. Get back down bone the rest of the meat out (heavy my pack was over 100 pounds his 80) and get up that rugged mofo of a canyon trail. Got back to camp and done finally around 5 that evening. Mt. Lion tracks over ours on last trip out. No deer but Im going to try again last two days of the season.
