Eastern Colorado Deer

Hi everyone! I am rather new to the site but I have been enjoying reading peoples posts and adventures. I am posting to try to get in contact with someone that actually hunts deer in Eastern Colorado. I will be hunting on private land in Yuma county (GMU 102) in December. I have had several scouting trips but I have not really talked to anyone that actually hunts this area. Most of the people I talked to had a little information but nothing from experience. I am not looking for areas to hunt but rather when the rut tends to fall, tactics, patterning etc.  I have read several things about when the rut hits here but once again, hearing it from someone that hunted out there would be more helpful. Also, many people that I have talked to were saying you would only find whitetails near the rivers or creek beds, but after scouting this seems to be somewhat true. Some of the bigger bucks I have seen were over a mile from any creek or river. Anyway, if anyone has hunter over there I would love to chat.

Thanks

I don't have any information

I don't have any information for you but would just like to wish you luck. You have a very valuable opportunity with private land and the tag to hunt it with. Let us know how you do and show some pics if you get one. It sounds like your well on your way to getting the area figured out.

Good luck again.

Welcome to the site.  There

Welcome to the site.  There is tons of useful information on this site and lots of people willing to help anyway they can.  Stick around and share anything you can, including the results from your upcoming hunt.

I have not hunted in GMU 102, but I have hunted GMU 95.  Is your goal a whitetail or would you also take a mule deer?  If you are after whitetails, I have very little useful information for you.  I will say that the area that I hunt is about 20 miles away from the nearest flowing river bottom, and we regularly see whitetails in the area.  Granted, it is typically only one whitetail hanging out with a group of mule deer, but it is a surprisingly common occurence.

Hopefully someone else can offer more info.  Good luck on your hunt!

102 LATE SEASON

I have only hunted the late season a couple of times. I am not sure what part of 102 you will be at. Last year it was 78 deg opening day! There are more Whitetail than there use to be and yes the creek is the location. However the larger bucks are still found in the deep canyons along with the Mule deer. The bucks loose alot of body weight due to the rut. The early season bucks weight up to 75lbs more. They were still chasing some the first week of Dec then. Canyons have some brush but mostly Yucca plants. Don't be fooled the deer will bed next to the yucca. Glassing early helps but mid morning and on is like Pheasant hunting, he who walks will have the best luck. With the open country the bucks will bed high on the hill sides and have a great view and advantage. This is just from my experence and it works for me. I hunted 102 since 1976.
