Dove Season Opener

Today marks the first day of phase one dove season. from noon till sunset we can hunt this first phase. I'll be headed out to  a PUBLIC dove field later today to try my hand at a few. I went twice last year and only got 3 doves(with 3 shots)...

I've been seeing alot more birds this year and we had our first cold front move in last night. Hopefully that will make a good hunt. They harvested the adjacent peanut field early this year, I think they waited untill the weekend before the season started last year so all the doves were next door eating peanuts.

I'm gonna toss my Mojo teal out and see if the wing motion will atract the doves. from what I hear even a mojo duck will work...

I Wish...

there were anything resembling a dove season in this part of the world.  The Nevada season runs Sept 1 - 30 and in this part of the state I was out hunting doe antelope with my daughter & wife who had the tags.  Of course the 20 gauge was in the truck in case of attack by zombie doves.  In the hills on 8 different days, had I shot every dove I saw (including the ones seen while driving down the highway) I still wouldn't have shot a limit of 10 birds.

Naturally the one day I forgot the shotgun we came through a small valley that had at least a hundred dove scattered between a half dozen springs.

So how did you do with the

So how did you do with the dove hunt? I take it your Phases are like a split season like duck hunting? Glad we do not have that here in Colorado. For the most part we have a good dove population here and it can be some fun and fast shooting. Will not get to hunt them this year but sure hope to get out after them next. Let us know how the Mojo worked, sounds interesting.

Yeah the season are split up

Yeah the season are split up like duck season. Although you can only hunt afternoons during the first phase and all day thereafter.

I went out there with my grandad and setup for a few hours. There were quite a few people out there and the miliet planted is coming along pretty good. The wind was prett strong and we didnt even see a dove. Not even on the powerlines going out. so I'm not sure what happened.

I was deer hutning last night and saw hundreds of them but I didnt want to burn a $10 arrow for a dove lol...

I'm thinking the second phase will be better it's still pretty hot around here. My dad's coming down from colorado in a few weeks and I think we're gonna find a paid dove field to hunt while he's here.

I'll keep posting if the season turns out any better.

Florida seems to have some

Florida seems to have some tight regs on the doves for sure. A paid dove field, wow that is a new one on me. Guess I am just lucky to live out west with allot of public land to hunt. Sounds very cool about getting out with your granddad and your dad coming in soon. To me that is a huge part of the hunt. Good luck and let us know how you do on the doves and the deer hunting.

Love the dove opener!!

Love the dove opener!!  Surprised it is late for you guys.  Seems like most of the country is September 1st, or right about that time.  Also, out here, we don't liek the cold front, or thunderstorms that come with them.  The storms and accompanying high winds tend to blow them out of town.  We like hot and dry conditions.

I hope you have a couple of good hunts!  Even though you only got 3 last time, to do it with 3 shots is great.  Now you just have to see 10 birds, and you're all set!

By the way, I am curious.  If you hunt doves that eat peanuts, do people with peanut allergies have to avoid eating the doves????? lol

Have fun!
