double and triple check your equiptment

2 yrs ago I decided to do some long island ny deer hunting. Here on Long island it was shotgun season, In this part of Ny, it is shotgun or muzzleloader only. A few months prior I did some pheasnt/rabbit huntting, Managed a few birds but no rabbits. So I come home and clean my gun and put it away till deer season. deer season is upon us with few inches of crunchy snow on the ground and we go. I find a nice area to sit and wait, and wait. As im waiting I here small foot steps coming towards me. Couldnt see anything because of the land drop off. At around 3 pm a nice size 4 pointer (atleast) comes up out at about 30-40 yds looks at me turns and stops. I have the most perfect shot anyone could ask for. Lifted my remington 1100 and set the bead on him, took a deep breath and pow! with that he's gone and back down the hill he went into the thick woods. I waited a few minutes and called my friend to help track him. We go to the spot where he stood waiting for me to take him and NOTHING! no blood no hair, nothing but big ass high tailing foot steps! we followed his tracks for a bit and now its getting dark. With that, I go home and clean my gun. To my stupidity surprise, I never changed my barrel back from when I went bird huntting. banghead banghead banghead Censored Censored

I don't get it. Do you have a rifled barrel for slugs or were you using buckshot? If you were using buckshot, the barrel swap would only matter if you had a fixed choke and were planning on using a more restricted choke for deer. 30-40 yrds shouldn't be that bad with even an improved cylinder choke and buckshot, but a modified would be the way to go. So I have to ask, what were you using?

I lived in No. Babylon till I was 17 and used to be a lot of deer out there. Even a few around us and lots of rabbit's. I imagine it's all grown up a lot of the island, but in the 50's it was a nice place to live. Spent a couple weeks every summer at Baiting Hollow and several trips a year to the Hamptons fishing. Lot of fishing in South Bay out of Captree Park. Loved the Mackrel runs every year. They put in the Long Island Expressway when I was about 12 or 13. Bayshore road was two lane back then. Last time I was there it was four lane.

Went to high school at North Babylon Hi. Called Wayne Middleton High School now. Wayne was the red headed, left handed first baseman on our base team. I was the shortstop till we moved to Oregon in 63'. Wayne died in Vietnam.

If your a bowler, Mike Lemongelo graduated in 63'. Knew him and his brother Pete really well. Next door neighbor for most those years was Julie Klien. Supposed to be the biggest gangster on the island but he was damn good to me. He went to Attica sometime after we left for life, probablu dead now. Admired hell out of the guy. He had his fault's but he was great with kids.

Nice to think back on an easier time of life.

I was supposed to use a riffled barrel. I've asked a few people about this and got a few different answers. at the range it shouldnt have been a problem. Either way he's not on my wall
