If you could have any hunting dog what would it be?
aint this post just exacly like the other post underneath this one? for what its worth i dig labs.
I would not trade my Labs for anything.
Well for ALL AROUND dog, I would have to go with one of the various Cur breeds. They are excellent family dogs, watch dogs, cattel dogs, works great on squirrel and coon and cats, they Will retrieve you duck and flush you upland birds. These were use for years for multipurpose dogs. I would choose either a Mt. Cur or the Lepord Cur....

I have one of each.....both are great dogs.
Presa Cenario haha Just kidding. Either a lab or brittney
I'm kinda found of Labs myself
Depends on what game you hunt most, but I would take a Lab. Ducks, and it can also flush pheasants and such.
I hunt a lot, and quite a variety of types of hunting, but even so the majority of time with my dogs is not spent hunting. I chose cattle dogs primarilly because they travel well and because they are pretty easy to train.
I had never really encouraged them to get involved in my hunting trips but I found that this breed is always looking for some work to do. Since they don't have cows to herd my dogs were eager to find some way to fit into my hunting activities.

This male will swim out and fetch waterfowl but his favorite thing is pheasants. He really likes cruising the fields and he has become pretty good at it. On elk hunts he will help by carrying out the loins in his dog pack.

My female is my waterfowl hunter. These days she is old and has had back surgery. She can't walk that far now. Nowdays she actually swims better than she walks.

I used to bring her out to the NAHRA and HRC hunt tests and let her fetch in the events. She really enjoyed that. In a few years she filled this entire wall behind her with ribbons.

These dogs are so fixated on having some work to do that we have to subscribe to both the Denver Post and the Pueblo Chieftain so that they can each fetch one in the morning. They wake up early and wait by the front door for the sound of the paperboys to deliver.
That's pretty cool! I never would think of using cattle dogs for any type of fowl, but hey, looks like it works. Nice photos!
