Does a lefty shotgun really matter?

Hey there,

As you know i'm left handed. My brother is also left handed.

We were debating on left handed pump action shotguns(remington 870 express). He tells me it's not all that necessary to get one.

He tells me the normal right handed gun is not a problem to shoot in left hand position. So my question is, how bad would it be to shoot a normal pump action shotgun in left handed position? I understand that a bolt action rifle in left hand would be convenient. But what about a left handed pump action shotgun? Does it matter? If not, i'll save some money and get a normal shotgun(shells eject from right).

What issues will I have? Pros? Cons?

Thanks.

Eric

The only thing that would be different is the shells ejecting at you but I am not sure if they would hit you in the face or not.

I shoot lefty and if you don't mind the shell ejecting in front of your face it works. I ended up with a Browning BPS.

When it shoots in front of the face is it that close?

My father shoots left handed with a pump rifle 760 rem and he said it wasn't a problem but there wasn't an option for him back when he bought the rifle.

I may take a chance and get the normal right handed model. Thanks CG.

Borrow one to shoot from somebody and see if it will be a problem for you. It is probably the only way you will know for sure. Thumbs up

As a left hand shooter, I chose the Mossburg 500 with the Top Slide safety over the cross bolt safety on the 870(which we used at work). The Mossburg were more user friendly in that regard.

Another option is to find a Ithica Mod 37. These are bottom eject pump shotguns so it dosent matter right of left handed.

I am a lefty. I would definitely get a left handed gun. For a pump, I would seriously consider the Browning BPS. It ejects straight down and has a tang safety. For myself, the safety has always been the issue. My first shotgun was a Ithaca Model 37. I had to take the brand new gun to a gunsmith to get the safety switched to a left handed one. I have shot a number of right handed shotguns. The hull ejecting in front of your face presents more of an obstacle in terms of breaking your concentration than anything else. I have heard of people getting hit in the face by the hull, but this is kind of rare. When you get into the higher priced shotguns, make sure that the stock is not cast for a right handed shooter.

I was thinking of the Browning BPS. Only problem is, not too many aftermarket parts.
