Boot, Welcome to BGH.
I have hunted the Zirkels a little but haven't hunted 214 yet. 14 is not really a good deer area and the success rates for deer and elk are low in 14. We have a lot better areas to hunt in Colorado, any particular reason you're choosing to hunt 14 & 214? Are you using a outfitter?
We have a place to stay in the Clark area. We have hunted the area before taking a few small bulls. We will be buying over the counter bull tags. We would appreciate any suggestions about different areas.
Boot, We hunted the Zirkels in 05 and my nephew killed a 5 point bull. We saw one small forky buck and some does but that is all we saw but this was the 3rd season, so you might be better off then we were since you're hunting second. The deer seem to migrate out before third season. I still haven't figured out the deer in that area. Sounds like you found a good elk area and have killed a few bulls. I talked to a friend who hunted up there last year and they saw some elk but not one deer. 214 might be better for deer then 14 and the stats on DOW's site said so. The problem with 214 is it has a ton of private land in it.
Let me start off by saying I am not a farmer.
I am a deer hunter and I do own a tractor and have all of the equipment - but that does not make you a farmer any more than standing in the garage makes you a car - well, you get the picture!
Having said that - and with most of my ineptitude fairly well hidden - I do think that buckwheat is one of the most under rated cover crops out there.
I say cover crop because I see mixed results as it relates to the deer eating the plants.
