direct flight from states or broken up

Guys,
Headed to the dark continent for the first time next year and I am in the process of booking a flight. Can get direct out of ATL to Johannesburg or fly to Amsterdam spend two hours then from Amsterdam to J'burg and vice versa. Will be traveling with gun. What are the pros and cons of direct v/s stopping and changing planes, i.e. VERY long flight v/s missing connections, etc.... Thanks in advance for your help.

Go non-stop. Less chance of luggage and guns getting lost.

i would recommend the direct flight also for several reasons

1) less chance of luggage mishaps
2) you have to file a form with dutch customs to transit with your rifle and or ammunition--this is a big pain in the neck to obtain, fill out, and then get back to dutch customs prior to your transit. it cannot be filled out when you get there. without it, you risk confiscation of your gun and ammo
3) the supposed benefits of breaking the flight up are minimal to my mind but if you have to do it, go through frankfurt instead as you do not have to get the form done

I guess I should add that the "direct" flight that I was refering to does stop in Dakar, but we don't de-plane, of course you probably know that
