difference between smooth and rifled barrel for deer

I was hoping someone could tell me the pros and cons of each type of barrel on a shotgun for deer. Mostly I'm concerned with the accuracy of a smooth bore. I'm looking at the 870 express combo.

thanks

I shoot a remington 870 with a scoped cantilevered fully rifled barrel. Accuracy is outstanding, punching ragged 1 hole groups at 50 yards and 2.5 to 3 inch groups at 100 yards. I have had best results with the Remington 3 inch copper solids, they kick like hell but group nicely. your best ghroups would vary by barrel and load. Sabot loads are the best.

Smooth bore slug barrels are generally open sight guns, never tried one for that reason. Scopes = dead deer .

I don't think there is really a con for a rifled barrel while big game hunting. As for smooth barrels, the accuracy is not as good and the sights are not that great but if it is all you have it is accurate enough for deer hunting.

Well, rifled barrels are more expensive, and considering the naturally-limited range of any shotgun slug you could argue that the improved accuracy is not needed. Other than the cost, though, there really is no downside to a rifled barrel.
