Deploying this year--planning next year's hunt w/Dad - Help?

All - I am an experienced hunter but fairly new to elk hunting. I shot my first elk last fall in CO on a early season rifle cow hunt and shoulda arrowed a nice 5x5 bull during archery season but that is another story!

Uncle Sam has decided to send me to Iraq for 6-8 months and it will eliminate my 2009 hunting plans. So I want to take my 61 yr old father on his first elk hunt. He's always talked about it and brother and I want to make it happen for him. Will be me, my brother and my father. We plan to purchase WY pref pts this summer with hopes at drawing permits in 2010. Would like my dad to get a chance at a bull but he would be ecstatic even with a cow. He raised us deer hunting and we are meat hunters.

Been doing some research and with 1 pt does anyone have any recommendations for rifle elk hunting in WY? I have a large wall tent and love the high country. Dad will more than likely not hunt far from roads but brother and I are not scared to hump it in a ways (1-3 miles). Been doing some research via Eastman's Hunting Journal MRS but was wondering if anyone would be willing to point us to a GMU that might make for a good hunt?

Any other suggestions? If you don't want to share publicly...please PM me. Appreciate any info anyone has to provide! Thank you.

I know we've talked a little about Colorado hunting previously, but just a reminder, nonresidents are forbidden from hunting Wyoming Wilderness Areas without a guide. And I hope you already applied, because Wyoming elk apps are due in January.

pts

I believe you can purchase pref pts only until Sep for WY. So plan is to purchase a pt this year in hopes at drawing a permit for 2010. Unless I misunderstood...

Purchasing Only a Preference Point can only occur from July 1, 2009 through September 30, 2009. Do not attempt to purchase a preference point only during any of the initial license application periods. You must wait until July 1st to purchase only a Preference Point. The price is $50.00 for Elk, $40.00 for Deer and $30.00 for Antelope ($10.00 for youth for each species). There is no application fee to purchase a Preference Point Only.

Thats the first I've heard of that, I should look into it. So do you just pay an application fee for the bonus point?

Yep I found it

"Answer:
You have three options. Option 1: You can apply for a license with a Preference Point option with the
opportunity to earn a Preference Point. You will submit the Preference Point fee along with your license fee
and application fee. If you are successful on your second or third choice hunt area, you will earn a
Preference Point. If you are successful on your first choice, you will not earn a Preference Point and will
receive a refund of your Preference Point fee. Option 2: You can apply for a license only with no desire to
earn a Preference Point. You will not earn a Preference Point. You submit your license fee and application
fee only. Option 3: From July 1 - Sept. 30, you can apply for a Preference Point Only with no desire to be
in the Option 1 or Option 2 drawing for a license. You submit the Preference Point fee only. You may not
select Option 1 and Option 3 in the same year if you have earned a preference point or if you have drawn
your first choice license in the initial drawing."
