Big gun! Prob is if you shoot a bear out of season even if it is self defence the state tends to take the bears side and it can go bad for you. Yet better to face the reprocussions fron the state than to be the main course for Mr. Bear. There is a "bear spray out there you can buy that says it will stop an attack? Proub just a big pepper spray? Best thing to do is just make a lot of noise when scouting, giving the bears a chance to vacate the area so you do not sneak up and startle them.
From my personal experience carry something anything, but if you can; carry a gun to be totally safe. Ive been chased and stalked by one, most of the little bears will be startled if you yell as loud as you can but Im sure thier are alot that would laugh at you and keep comming. I was told by someone to carry a 12 guage but I wouldnt wanna shoot the bear and kill it so I found out a way to not kill it and only hurt it a little try handloading rock salt into a 12 guage shell I guarantee it will work might take 2 shots but he wont stick around for a 3rd.
