deer vision

I was spotted by every deer that walked by me the other day while scouting and they all came from upwind.  The wind was light, but steady from W/NW.  I had only been in the tree for about twenty minutes untill a group of three antlerless deer came out from the edge of about a two acre bedding area of very thick vegetation.  They were about twenty yards away and noticed me immediately.  Perhaps they could have seen some movement, I thought to myself.  They all just walked right by but very cautiously and were gone as fast as they had appeared.  Then about a half hour later a large doe came out of the same bedding area but from a different spot (about 20-25 yards to the North).  She was about 15 yards away when she first appeared and seemed to have spotted me right away.  This time there was no chance for her to see me move, because I never flinched.  How is this happening, I wonderd?  She too, moved right along, very quickly and cautiously.  Which has left me to wonder, is my clothing giving me away?  Last year was a very "off season" for me and; from what I remember, a lot of times I was noticed right away.  Of course, some of those times were when the deer came from the opposite direction that I had anticipated and they caught wind of me first.  On this occasion though, I was wearing dark camo pants that were made for fashion not hunting (Old Navy brand).  A dark schemed camo jacket that was very inexspensive and not a name brand.  I was up about 15 feet in a type of pine tree that has nothing but forearm sized dead limbs from the base of the trunk to about 20 feet up. The trunk itself, was wider than my shoulders.  So I know that my outline was concealed, at least physically. Could it be that the dyes on my clothes are used with a higher concentration of UV colors or brighteners than traditional hunting wear?  Is it possible that the deer saw the small silver lace hooks on my hiking boots? Or a combination of both?  Or maybe I'm just over analyzing.  What can the deer really see?

thats funny.... So that was

thats funny.... So that was you, I heard some flapping behind me but; I thought it was just a couple of turkeys flying up to their roost.  I guess that says a lot for rubber boots. I just may have to invest in a pair.  I did however approach the tree from the East.  And the deer all came from the West.  I'm absolutly certain they didn't smell me.  It was either motion or sight.  I'm probably just being paranoid.  Last year ended a seven year success streak.  Being unsuccessfull has left a lot of "what ifs" for me to think about during the off season.

Yep.  Sometimes they have

Yep.  Sometimes they have that sixth sense.  You can do everything possible to be invisible, and still get busted.  They just know something is wrong....

Out of place

6th sense is a real obstacle to overcome and I am convinced most prey animals have it.

That said it sounds like you were just out of place in the woods. I believe that deer have a photographic memory and can spot even small abnormalities in their surroundings. that's why "Higher is better" is heard so much.

These abnormalities combined with their 6th sense spells trouble to them even if they are not sure what you are or if you represent danger.

They will act cautiously and stare and sometimes snort, wheeze and stomp around in an effort to get you to move while easing downwind to try and scent you. I was always taught that Deer will react only after they have picked you up with any 2 of their senses with smelling you the exception, they will spook and evacuate the area with nothing more than a wiff of your scent.

Absolutely.  They know "Hey, that tree didn't have a lump in it last week", or "that bush wasn't as full the other day".  Pretty smart critters.

Thank you

Thanks for putting me at ease.  Sometimes I get so caught up in the now, I sometimes forget to look  at the big picture.  You have reminded me of deer behavior that I had forgotten about, thanks!
