Deer Hunting in the Ottawa, ON Area

Hi all,

I'm just wondering if anyone knows of any good spots they are willing to share in the Ottawa area. I had to take a year off to recover from shoulder surgery and now I'm a hunter without a home :( . I had a great spot that I used to hunt, but the land has changed ownership this year and the new owners don't allow hunting on the property.

Anyone got any areas they know are Hunter Friendly? Any info would help.

Dave

I'd love to help you - but I'm in sort of the same boat myself. I must have knocked on a 100 doors in Lanark Co asking permission and got shot down every time. One farmer who's practically my neighbour (I live in 64B) said I could hunt his land, but he didn't think there were many deer there, and I think he's right.

There are some small parcels of crown land around Almonte (that's where I'll be) and the Larose forest. But you'll probably be crowded there. Lots more crown land near Darling and White's Lake, but deer numbers are much lower there. At least that was my take when I scouted that area in late summer. You can get a map that shows all the Crown land for about $10. I think it's called the E Ontario Recreation map (it's not the Backroad Map Book, although that's handy too - it doesn't show Crown land) - also shows all fish & game related boundaries.

Saskie,

Thanks for the info - I'll take a look. I was planning to go out tomorrow AM, so I'll have to be quick. Its kinda strange to me that out in Lanark and WMU 64B we're having such a problem finding spots. All the farmers are complaining about the deer problem, but they won't let anyone hunt on their land. Its quite frustrating to say the least!

Tell me about it eye roll

Actually one other (local) farmer would have allowed me to hunt but he had already given permission to about 6 other people and he figured (quite fairly) that was about enough for his land.

Well - not much we can do I guess. If I hear of or find any decent spots I'll let post them here.

I'm going to do a little searching tomorrow out in the Durobin/Woodlawn area.

Cheers,

Dave

Since I live in Woodlawn, I'd reccomend starting along Stonecrest Rd N to the river. There's usually more deer along Torboulton Ridge Rd, but those lands are either no hunting or spoken for already (I checked). I didn't try down Stonecrest so maybe there's some opportunities there, and there are decent deer numbers, especially the north end.

Just a note - its archery/shotgun/muzzleloader only there (64B).

Thanks for the info saskie! Quick question. I own a small lot out in the woodlawn area. The lot is on Buckhams bay road. The problem is I think that it is that if memory serves correctly Dunrobin road is the border to distinguish between huntable and non huntable for WMU 64B.

Is that right - or am I letting my small little lot go to waste? I see tons of Deer signs all around out there. Just last week when I was showing the lot to someone, I found a shed right antler from an eight pointer.

Once again, thank you - you are a font of useful information! Well, Good luck on your hunting! I'll be out in that area again and checking to see if there is anyone willing to allow me to hunt!

You'll want to verify this with the CO's or police, but I have been told that you can hunt power line clearings provided the "no discharge of firearms within X yds of..." rules are adhered to.

Something to consider, especially with that power line running up from Fitzroy Hbr and right through the Carp Hills.
