I was a kid hunting with my big brother when we found a pit about 6 feet deep next to a deer trail. My brother told me that a bowhunter used it for deer hunting. I have seen a few in hill country that were dug into a hillside.
I don't know anyone who does. The most common thing I see in the woods out here are simple lean-to's. Sort of like a tee pee. They align tall branches upright around one side of a tree, and sit in it. I actually see a ton of these while hiking around.
around here it's mostly tree stands a few blinds but pits no ,you would need a sump pump or it would fill with water and snow ,even blinds are not a good idea as there are still people that will shoot at anything that moves ! but i still find a few of those
Let me start off by saying that I am a scaredy cat.
For someone that spent 3 years in 82nd Airborne jumping out of all manner of military aircraft, my friends find this ludicrous - but... it is what it is!
Climbing stand? Yep, still scared - put me up 15' and that is about it.
Ladder stands? I am better in these - but still cautious.
Chain on stands? Used to love them, now they terrify me.
I was once ridiculed for putting chain on stands waaaay too high - some of my friends...
