Deer Gun

Okay, let me give you another hint. Most avid "deer" hunters(other big game aside for now) will agree there are many popular calibers out there. And in these times most are easy to find a wide variety of bullets and weights for, to hunt other game if you wish.
You are sixteen, do like I did when I bought my first gun. Go to a few gun dealers and look around at the different manufacturer's products. Whether it's a Remington, Ruger, Savage, Tikka...whatever it is, one or two of them you will just fall in love with. By the way it feels, and by it's looks. Then pick out an all-around caliber, because some specific ones aren't offered in certain models.
Unless you are very lucky, you won't be doing any serious hunting that requires specific gear for a while(heck I've deer hunted for 20 years and don't need it yet!) My guess is you'll be hunting under a normal variety of weather and terrain conditions, that most guns these days will handle. So in my opinion, get what appeals to you now, in looks and feel(then caliber). Because there might be other's better later in life, but this will always be your first gun.

Ever since the age 12 i have hunted with a 30-30 Winchester and it never gave me a problem when i wanted the deer on a far range and never gave me a problem in the brush but yes i think the 270 is also a good gun only if your going to hunt on open long ranges i used a 270 one year and like the 30-30 it never gave me a problem and i hunt alot of brush my dads uses a 30-06 and its a good gun to the way i see it never under estimate your guns they can do the under estimated things poeple said a 308 isnt a good brush gun and my brother-in-law uses his every year and we all get the deer we look for and if not then they will be there next year.

Thanks i will be on wide open spaces just north the qu'appelle valley. Right south of 22 highway near Cupar so if you know the area it is wide open and there is nothing but sloughs.

I use a Manlicher 270, but i noe often use my Marlin 35 lever action, and never had a problem dropping deer with it. Its not overly long and is easy to shoulder and get follow up shots with.
