What is the best gun for a kid around 16 wanting to do some whitetail hunting. I was thinking something along the lines of a .270 or .243 i dont really know any input.

I would recomend the 270 for the simple reason it is more versitile. All though i have seen moose taken with a 243. 270 is a good all round gun.

I have used a 243 w/ 100 grain bullets on mule deer, should be fine for whitetail too. Good luck when you hit the field.

I agree with the .270. I would also add the 30/30 depending on which part of the province you're hunting in. If you're going to be N of the N. Sask River (in the bush) it will be fine too.

Take a look at the 7mm-08 Great round. Both my daughters shoot it. It is a great all around cartridge. They have shot everything from antelope up to elk with it. The important thing is to get a rifle that fits you well and that you are comfortable with.

Take a look at this article on deer gun selection, this may help in your decision.
Good luck...The link is gonna look a bit messed up, just copy and paste it.

Consider your typical shots too. Are they open shots at long range or are they going to be mostly in timber or brush. The .270 is versatile like they say. It shoots fairly flat so you can use it later for elk or antelope if you need to. My nephews grew up with a .300 Savage (NOT .300 mag) and loved it for shots under 150 yards. It's kind of between a 30/30 and .308. Remington actually has a new model 700 coming out this year chambered in it. Personally I have used the .270, .300 Sav., 7mm, and 30/30. It all comes down to you working on being a good shot-taking good shots. Good luck.

Pick a rifle that your son will grow into. 30-06 might be the right size, and is also a load you can find just about anywhere you go huning. I have two sons, that's the way I went. Have fun!
