Deer encounter of the Unkilling Kind

Kids didn't have school today so we took the dog (Ben) and went for a short nature walk close to our house. They were having fun looking at deer tracks, feathers, coyote poop, deer dung, flowers, etc...and Ben was off wandering around giving his nose a work out. We got to a small creek and just got across when we heard this Gut wrenching bawling coming from the trees right next to us. At first I thought we had interupted someones hunt and they were blowing on their call as loud and as obnoxious as they could, but after we checked our pants for soiling, we saw the source of the commotion. Ben had used his nose to uncover a button buck hiding out in the weeds. They weren't more than 10 yds from us and Ben had this little deer in a death lock. Looked like one of those Discovery animal shows where wolves attack an Elk or something. So I went over and freed the deer from Ben's relentless attack and the deer runs right past my kids with Ben back in pursuit. I chased them back down in the creek with the kids yelling and crying to save the deer. I got Ben back off him and made sure he didn't get close to the deer again. The little buck was exhausted and had a few bites and bruises on him and after a few minutes he got to his feet. I sat there and made a visual check on him to make sure he was going to be OK and had the kids come in and get a closer look at him. He seemed to be very glad we saved his ass and stayed right there with us. He regained his strength and as I was trying to persuade him to get out of the creek and go rest in the grass he took a couple of lunges at me like he was in attack mode. So feeling sure he was better we left him be. The kids thought it was all pretty cool and a Great adventure lol Ben's in timeout

Sounds like an educational experience for both the kids and the deer.

I'll bet he grows up to be the smartest and wariest buck in the county. neener!

Now, if you can just get Ben to chase 12 pointers... Thumbs up

That is exactly why I try to spend as much time in the woods, ya just never know what is going to happen. Especially love having the kids there when it happens, how many kids can go to school and say they saw there dog almost eat a deer lol Lotsa fun Yes

I always get a kick out of people that say," My dog wouldnt actually kill a deer. Chase it around maybe, but kill it no way". I watched in horror three years ago as my female lab caught up to and tackled a pregnant doe in the bean field across the dirt road. She had run that deer until it was out of gas. I got her off the deer too but had i not been there she would have killed it no doubt. Full on Alpo at the time too!You cant take the hunt totally out of a dog, they are predators.

He was abandoned and left by our mailbow 8 years ago. He's been a great dog and is very protective of our kids. He won't let another dog close to them Thumbs up

Thats a good looking dog right there!
Just a warning about the laws in Pennsylvania (and I'm sure some other states too) if a dog is attacking a big game animal in Pa. anyone can shoot to kill it. It's in the hunting regulations book!

Ben

Get a 3-D target of bambi soak it with deer sent when he goes after it hit him with pepper spray. 1-3 times should teach him not to do it ever again{ dont pepper him more than once each time he attacks]. sit in ground blind next to bambi dont have the family around. set up blind 1-5 days befor the lesson wear rubber boots to mask your sent or he will be pissed at you if possible us a co-worker or neighbor he doesnt know. slip them in put out bambi then let out dog. dont forget to give him some goodys after the lesson. Peace! PS any time I see a dog other than hunting dog chasing a game animal he/she/it is a coyote as far as I am concernd. I have several dogs and use them to trail big game and they Thumbs up dont need a leash. Thumbs up
