Deer do the darndest things!!

OK I thought I had seen it all from deer

Not so!

I saw a deer standing on top of a hay bale this afternoon - out in the middle of a wide open field!

Guess they are closer to goats than we would like to admit...

What is the craziest thing you have seen deer do?

Okay, maybe his buddies

Okay, maybe his buddies talked him into keeping watch for hunters?  I saw a video on a hunting show of this young buck playing "tag" with a dog in these people's back yard.  It was pretty crazy as they were chasing each other all around the yard.

The people thought it was so cute, but maybe I am just an old curmudgen, but I didn't find it cut.  The deer was pawing at the dog with its hooves and I was just waiting for it to injury the dog.  I think we should keep wild and domestic animals separate.  Maybe I am just no fun.

I do think they are cute and

I do think they are cute and they are fairly harmless - until the fall of the year.

People are injured - some greviously - every year in October and November by pet deer.

A seemingly docile and playful pet a month or so ago turns into a raving lunatic when his testosterone goes off of the chart.

The best policy for most wild animals - and that includes squirrels, raccoons, foxes etc is to leave wild animals wild.

There are some heartwarming stories out there, to be sure - but there are also some tragic ones too.

Back to the deer on the hay bale - I have no freaking idea what he was doing up there!!

Hey, nothing personal, but I

Hey, nothing personal, but I don't want to hear about some deer on a hay bale, not now anyway.  I want to hear about your hunt and the big deer with your tag on it :)  How goes the hunt?

I want to hear about it.

I want to hear about it.  That's pretty cool.  I can't imagine the identity crisis that poor deer is going through.... lol

Shoot that big one, would ya?  give us a good success story Jim!

Boys - I am trying - I

Boys - I am trying - I promise!

The deer did not cooperate today and the woods are flat filled with hunters.

I am going to hunt til the bitter end - I am all the way up here so I gotta make the most of it.

Going to have to try a new strategy in the morning since my plan today did not work.

Sifting through the tea leaves right now to see what they say.

I fear it is a toss up between trying to get away from the crowds and trying to get near the food sources where the does are likely to be found.

We will see!

Thanks

Jim

With all the traffic you're

With all the traffic you're talking about, I think I would find the nastiest cover from the farthest entry point with a water source in the middle. Can't be that hard? Hahaha

Good luck, Jim

So this is what you were referring to in the other post. Hahaha. Now I know.

Update: This referring to a post CVC made earlier on a different thread. FYI

ECU That is exactly where I

ECU

That is exactly where I was today - in very nasty terrain.
The issue was that the deer were not moving in there

Even now I am questioning my decision to pull the stand - maybe I should have toughed it out in there another day...this based on the reports I am getting from the other hunters here in camp

Seems everyone had a tough day

There are nine hunters in this camp and only one deer was taken - a small spike.

At any rate, tomorrow is another day - let's see what happens

Good luck in NC

Jim

My uncle used to say, "Keep

My uncle used to say, "Keep your butt in the stand until you kill a deer." I guess you could read between the lines to mean, stay in the same stand.

I've certainly heard that many times from an accomplished hunter around here. He keeps telling me I have too many stands. "Pick one stand and hunt it," he says.

Like you said, tomorrow a new day.

I guess this is another

I guess this is another thread altogether but have you ever noticed how some stands or some climbing trees keep coughing up big bucks year after year??

I am left to wonder if we could do a study of these locations and reach some conclusions - if we would not be better off when it came time to place a new stand??

How many times have you placed a stand or identified a climbing tree that you were incredibly stoked about it only to find later (after hunting it repeatedly) that it was a bust?

I have two trees in my memory that you just could not do wrong in...if you sat them - you saw deer - that simple!

I have tried repeatedly to figure out what it was about those trees and can not put all of the clues together and reach a conclusion...

I have a new property for 2011 - I am going to try to do a study on which stand placements work and which do not - based on some good record keeping and then crunching the numbers on sightings, doe to buck ratios and harvest records...

May take a few years but I have a five year agreement on the property - so we will see what we shall see!

Who else has similar trees???
