I have never used a decoy on bears, though I would try a fawn if I had one and the setup was right.

A fawn decoy would be my first choice also. I dont own a fawn decoy either, but contemplating whether or not it would be a useful purchase. The areas I hunt are walk in only and will be toting gear several miles. wasnt sure I wanted to add a decoy to the pack, hence the question as to weather or not bears hang up outside of range when calls are used.

From what I've read a bear will lose interest once the calling has stopped, but I have not read anything that would suggest that a bear will hang up if it doesn't have a visual to help fool it.

Believe me......they will hang up.
Some will come on a string, but others will hover, take a look and leave.

In the case where the bear hangs up, at about what distance?

I have found the distance to vary, mostly topography and the visibility (from the bears perspective).

Some will charge in, others will waddle, some come in at slow but determined pace. Others will hang at an edge and blow and huff as well as break stuff.
