The death of a stubborn Tom!

I was finally able to go Turkey hunting last Thursday. I got set up right around 6am, and there was birds all around me. I was hunting on the edge of a really big field on a friends farm. There was about 20 birds milling around in the field, and I could see a big tom strutting with 2 hens about 500-600yrds straight down the edge of the field from me. I sat and watched the tom from about 6am until 12pm calling, but he was'nt leaving his girls. In Illinois you can only hunt spring turkey until 1pm, so by noon I was a little aggrevated.

I decided to try to stalk withing shooting range. I stalked down the edge of the wood line until I was were I thought I would be in shooting range (I was wrong Brick Wall,) ). Anyway, when I stepped out into the field I was still about 50yrds away, and the three birds started to walk into the woods. I took the shot, and of course missed. The birds took off running into the woods, and I ran to where they went into the woods. Well the tom stopped running once he made it into the woods, and started walking up a hill. He was about 35 yrds up the hill, and I steadied and shot. I did't miss that time, and he came tumbleing back down the hill to me.

He had a 9 1/2 inch beard, and a little over 1 inch spurs. He is now at the taxidermist, per my 3 1/2 year old daughters orders. She wanted him on the wall next to "Uncle Buck" lol You have to love kids!

Yeah, she's a good girl. She talked her mom into doing a full mount on that old bird, in the Strut position. She has been blowing on duck calls since she was 1 1/2 years old, and she loves playing with the box call.

Thanks! I just took my little girl to the taxidermist to see the bird. Its mounted and in the drying stage. She got a real kick out of seeing all of the trophies that were in the studio. She has named the turkey "Bob", I don't know where that came from but it was good for a laugh! Thumbs up
