"Dam" good time!!

I took off the the Tallapoosa River on monday and floated about five miles. We jumped about 20 wood ducks and I took one drake wood duck. About 1/3 of the way through the float a big ol' beaver came swimming up the side of the bank so, seeing as how he was eatin up a bunch of trees I let him have it. I had to shoot 5 times with a 12ga to get him( 3 times with number 4's and 2 times with my buddies gun shooting number 3's) Anyways we took him to the taxidermists and weighed him in at 44lbs. I skinned him last night and have the plet drying. So all in all it wasn't bad day to hunt

I'll post pic a soon as I can.

It was huge. It's body alone, no head, legs, or tail was about as big as a large daypack or bookbag.

I got one about 10 years ago around that weight and was 2 miles back in the woods. 44lbs dead weight feels like 300 by the time you get out.

Three wood duck drakes is a cool way to start your duck hunting odyssey. I'm not sure what category the beaver falls under. Float / jump shooting is a good way to start. Decoy shooting is fun, but can also be extremely boring if nothin' is flying. There is also potentially significant investment in calls, decoys, etc. In earlier years most of my hunting was decoying / calling - and we had a `blast'. The spots I hunted this year didn't really present themselves with good decoy situations (at least during the times I could hunt), so I adapted to `spot and stalk' methods. It's been a lot of fun.

Finally got the pic shrunk. He was kinda flat after ridning in the boat for three hours then in the truck for another hour.

... well, it's over. Our waterfowl season ended 17 minutes ago. In the last minutes of season I went out to a couple spots that have been good off and on through the season. I was sloppy and noisy on approach to the first spot, and not paying good attention - a pair mallards clued in to my approach - swam out to where they could look - and I was busted about 80 yards out. Argh. I had two more spots to check in the time of one - and the one I picked was void of quacks. In retro - seeing it was my last time out - I should have taken the first spot slower, obviously. It leaves me bitter sweet. Bitter that the last evening ended empty ... sweet, though, thinking of other times when I scored. But also reminded that no wild creature is a slam dunk to get into the freezer.

Now withdrawal will start ...

Tell me bout those withdrawls!! I've started running with a friend out at a local park and there are mallards everywhere, even a occasional wooduck pair or two. It's hard not to set up a blind right alongside the runnning track. Still hittin' the deer woods found likely late season spot but no deer yet. Still got 9 duck days left and 11 deer days.

To assuage the withdrawals we started climbing-hiking today - in prep of fall hunts in nasty terrain (hopefully some bighorn sheep hunts). Saw about 50 deer. Also saw three mallards probably poached from the road and shooter too lazy to go thru fence and wade into 4 in. deep water to retrieve them. Sick.
