Custom Rifle Action?

If you were to build a custom rifle (a working rifle not a fancy foo foo rifle), what action would you use and why? It wouldn't have to be an ultralight rifle in the end but it couldn't be a heavyweight either. All opinions welcome.

Rem 700 bolt, Browning lever or Ruger 1B.

I like 700 Rem actions, easy to bed. I suspect the Savage is also. Only custom I have is an 03-A3 and it's a dandy. But I didn't have to bed it.

Remington 700 actions seem to be the most popular but mauser makes a nice action to start a custom job with as well.

Highflyer,

A Remington 700 type action would be one of my last choices for a hunting rifle. The Rem. design does not have many of the important features that make a rifle function reliably and safely.

The Rem. does have a three position safety nor does it lock the firing pin, the bolt handle is just tack welded on with no interlock, no control round feeding, a tiny spring for a extractor.

The M70 type actions have far more desirable features. Today the Kimber embodies that design into a lighter weigh and stainless steel as well.

Tell us more about what you want.

I've never hunted foo foo but they sound delicious. Just kidding. To answer your question if it were a dangerous game rifle I would go with a mauser type action. CZ I think makes one perfect for this, so does Ruger if you don't mind castings instead of forgings. . Non dangerous game, Remington 700 would be great. IMHO

I would say a Remington 700 or a Winchester 70.

Funny the USMC Scout Snipers, Army Scout Snipers, FBI Snipers, Secret Service Snipers and Countless LE agencies have been using the rem 700's and variants for about 40 years. Some of those men are carrying them in a battle field and if they wen't reliable I doubt they'd be carrying them. I have been abusing the Rem 700 in training for over 10 years as a LE Sniper and add another 15 as a hunter. Of all my training and expernce the rem 700 has out numbered all other about 10 to 1. If it wasnt reliable I wouldn't be using it.

remington,

I repeat that the Remington rifle is not the best choice for hunting or sniping or battle for that matter for the reasons that I gave.

A dangerous game hunter chooses a control round feed rifle for functional reliability.

The forces had no choice as to what rifle they had to use.

It's a non dangerous game set up and when I started pondering this project I leaned toward the 700 action. I've never seen one fail in any way shape or form and I actually don't see the benefits of controlled round feeding in a deer / elk rifle. It is something I have pondered extensively but I have yet to be able to see any advantages.

I have never seen a Remington fail in any way either. Nor have I failed to see one feed, a bolt handle fall off, an extractor fail or any of the other ills associated with them. I have had a good nimber of them over the years and they were no more nor any less reliable than any other I had. Have had Sako L61, L461, Win mod 70's, Many different Mausers, Ruger's and probably more, I don't remember. But the round actions are easiest to bed well in my experience.

I don't believe that controlled round feed is all that much better. ask anyone that used a Mauser that didn't have the extractor altered to close over a rim. With that if you drop a round into the load port and slide the bolt shut, it won't close and you'll have to push out the round with a rod.
