Crossbow hunting in NY

I know theres been talk and a bill put out to allow crossbow hunting in the state of NY. Has anyone heard anything further on this, is it legal or not. and what does everyone feel about using the crossbow for hunting. I would really like to see this bill pass, i have a bear compound but not comfortable enough to use it for hunting and i would love to get out there during bow season, and not have to wait till shotgun season opens on Long Island.

Crossbow

Crossbows are still illegal in NYS. I wouldn't be opposed to hunting with a crossbow but I'm doing just fine with my compound bow.

Just read this at the site of

Just read this at the site of Senator George Maziarz, this was as of July 1, 2010:

Senator George Maziarz (R-C, Newfane) is pleased to announce that the State Senate has given final passage to legislation (S.6793-B) he co-sponsored to allow for hunting with crossbows in New York State.

“Normally I’m forced to spend a lot of time in Albany fighting against new laws that infringe on sportsmen’s rights,” Senator Maziarz said.  “Today, I’m very pleased that we’re doing something positive for the hunting community.  By incorporating the use of crossbows, we are opening up more hunting opportunities for a variety of New Yorkers, including seniors and the disabled.  This is a step in the right direction that is long overdue.”

Senator Maziarz has been working to get a crossbow bill passed into law for a number of years.  He first introduced legislation in 2003 to direct the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to promulgate rules and regulations for hunting with a crossbow.  His predecessor, Senator John Daly, had advocated for similar legislation in the 1980’s and 1990’s.

“Opening the door to crossbows is good for the sportsmen community as a whole,” Senator Maziarz added.  “Getting more people involved can only be a good thing for preserving and expanding sportsmen’s rights in Albany.”

The legislation approved today specifies that crossbows shall be authorized for any big game season when the shotgun or muzzle loader is permitted.  Crossbows for hunting deer and bear must have a fourteen inch bolt, a seventeen inch width, a twenty-four inch length, a draw weight of between one hundred and two hundred pounds, and a trigger safety.  Training on the safe use of crossbows will also become part of the curriculum of basic hunter education courses.

Incorporating crossbow hunting in New York State has been supported in the past by groups such as Disabled Sportsmen of America, Safari Club, New York State Conservation Council, the Niagara County Federation of Conservation Clubs, and the Shooters’ Committee on Political Education (SCOPE).

The bill also eases the requirements for physically disabled persons to obtain permission to use a longbow modified with a mechanical device to help draw, hold, and release the long bow.

Senator Maziarz has encouraged Governor David Paterson to sign the bill into law.

I know a lot of bowhunters

I know a lot of bowhunters are against the idea but I think it would be good for hunters in NY. I don't think I would switch to using a crossbow now but when i'm older i think I would like to use a crossbow. Just my opinion of course.

I do not like the idea of

I do not like the idea of creating a seperate crossbow season or of letting hunters use crossbows during archery season. I don't have a problem with letting people use them during rifle season though.

Crossbows

If it's legal, i have no problem with it, during any season. Hunting is hunting, and if someone wants to use a crossbow, or compound bow, or a sling-shot, if it's legal, and you're hunting, I say go for it! and good luck. Sportsmen/Sportswomen, need to stop in-fighting, just because you personally don't like a particular weapon, you should not condem the weapon, again, as long as it's a legal means of take.

So you do not care if someone brings thier rifle into your area and shoots the deer from 300 yards away that is coming into your stand. You think that rifles should be allowed in bowseason? Same for muzzleloading seasons? This does not make any sense. What would be the point of having primitive hunts. You would make it almost impossible for anyone with a bow or a muzzleloader to get anything. That is crazy. Just because something is legal at one point in the year, it does not give anyone the right to just start using it whenever they want.

crossbow in ny

I said nothing of the sort. If there is an archery season, and the crossbow is legal to use during that season, I have no problem with it. I said nothing of using a rifle during bow season. Using the proper weapon in that particular season and it is legal, whats the problem. I think the crossbow has been around almost as long as the bow and arrow, so why not use it durning primitive arms. You misunderstood me, I didn't say any weapon goes all season, use the correct weapon in the correct season. If it is legal to use, so be it. I don't think the crossbow should be limited to rifle season, it is archery equipment, and should not be fired at game over 40 yds. anyway.

Crossbow

I agree with Bundy about if it is legal then it is okay with me, but I will add one other point about what should be legal, specifically about rifles during archery season.  No rifles should not be allowed because rifles will negatively impact the quality of my archery hunt and pose a safety risk to me.  To be successful with a bow you must be hunting deer that are relatively unspooked and rifle season gets them spooked, plus you need to use camo and be concealed.

Hence, if I am "invisible" to the deer then I am invisible to other hunters, especially at a distance.  A rifle hunter will not see me and that puts me at risk to be shot.  Therefore, rifles should not be used during archery season.  Now, if I want to wear hunter orange and assume the risk, I can hunt with a bow during rifle season.  My presence does not impact the quality of the rifle hunt or their safety.

Crossbow use is similar to compound bow use as you have to get close, depend on concealment and have very limited range with the arrow so crossbows do not negatively impact a archer's hunt quality nor do they pose a risk so they can be allowed during archery season.

In my opion if its legal go

In my opion if its legal go fo it, i however dont think it should be open during archery season, in oregon we have some areas that you can only use traditional archery equipment like long bows or recurvse for half the season then after that you can use any legal bow compound included. I would be ok with something like that for crossbows. half season with only compound or traditional then allow the use of crossbows, or make them legal during rifle or muzzle loader season.its not that i have  a problem with them its just a matter of seasons and legal weapons, its not like i can have a muzzle loader tag and use my rifle, thats just a comparison to typical bows and crossbows. Happy hunting to all with what ever weapon you choose to use.
