Coyote hunting in Norhteast

Hello everyone! I'm new here and have really liked reading thru many of the old posts. I'd like to hear some discussion about coyote hunting in the Northeast. I live in Mass.(I accept your condolences) and am just starting hunting yotes. I actually managed to call in a beauty three weeks ago in Middleton but missed him clean with a rifle. I'd like some input about weapons of choice for yotes. Alot of the info I've found is from out west. I've read all about varmit rifles and long range shooting. Here in Mass. I seriously cannot picture a shot at coyotes over 50yds. The coyote I missed was at 25yrds. I'd like to use a shotgun but in Mass. it's illegal to possess BB shot or larger expcept for waterfowl and deer. To my knowledge that limits hunting coyotes with a shotgun to #4 lead or #1 steel. This doesn't seem effective to me on a 30lb+ coyote. What do you think? What have others experienced? Any ideas on getting the regulations changed? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

i hear you

hey i am also new to this forum. Nice to talk with someone especially about something i really enjoy doing. I go yote hunting alot and have seen some come, some go and some mangy ones. I myself use a savage 17 or sometimes i use a 12 guage with buckshot. i enjoy hunting them in the winter months and i use a cass creak game call with either a feather flex rigor rabbit or a feather flex fawn decoy. it seems to bring yotes, foxes and coons right close for a shot. dont forget about your bush-in-a-bag ghillie suits and all the scent eliminators. they seem to help, although the best piece of advice i can give you is to sit still. now i was wondering if you could help me with something. There is a girl that i really like at school and i dont know what to do about it. im 14 please help.

I dunno. I've never been that great at chatting up the girls anyhow.

Try giving her flowers or something.

Try using hevi shot. I use #4 cause thats the biggest size we can use. Don't have any experiance with it on coyotes but at 40 yds the 10 or so pieces of shot that hit the center of the target went clean through (it was 1/2 inch plywood)
There is a guy on huntingpa that claims to have dropped one at 60 yds with #2 hevi shot.

Re: i hear you

This is a new one I've haven't heard in years, when all fails, give her "compliments" "COMPLIMENTS" and don't be shy Oops! Oops!

Now, to yotes, a good call works well, any dead chickens kicking around, hang some chicken guts etc. in a tree where you know there is yotes hanging around.Let them feast on this stuff a few times to get them coming regular- pick a good location where you can see the bait, rest is up to you ! Wink

calling coyotes

Anyone try using a turkey call? A guy I work with made me a tape with turkey calls on it. I tried it twice and it seems to work fine. Didn't get any shooting, but I did get to see 2.

Since HEVI·SHOT pellets are 10% heavier than lead and have 25% more energy at 50 yards than steel pellets have at 30 yards, I also suggest you try #2 or #4 shot.

It's amazing that Remington is getting 1,450 fps out 12 gauge 3" shells with 1 1/4-oz's of Tungsten-Nickel Iron Alloy.

147grain,
thanks for the info,I've been looking for a load fit for duck/geese hunting.
tired of the steel shot as to its weight and range.
Is this a new product or been around for awhile?
what is the pricing on these?
thanks a bunch!

hevi shot has been around for a few years and they run about $20 a box (10 in a box) they do hit hard, if you got the $ to spend its well worth it.

Killin coyotes

Hey, your huntin my old stompin ground. It sounds like your callin is workin for you but your havin trouble closin the deal. No matter what gun you decide to use your going to haveto stop them for a moment to get your shot. Go to huntsmart.com and buy yourself a rigor rabbit. It's small and it shakes back and forth. Its generally enough to make them stop for a quick look.If not, make a few quick kissing noises with your mouth, and when they look up its time to shoot quick. My weapon of choice is the .22Hornet. We usually hunt between sundown and midnight then from sunup till noon.Remember,a coyotes most active time of day is from sunup until about 11:00am. hope this helps you close the deal. Goodluck. Thumbs up
