I like to use fox sent. Along with the calling, It stinks like hell, but it brings them in.

1. Your right, very smart animals. Try different things. get a rabbit squealer or two, either jack rabbit or cotton tail, what ever there is most of in your area. Get a howler or two, the Red Desert howler made by Dan Tompson game calls is said to be the best, very versatile. I use the Hot Dog by primos, very good, loud call. Practice getting the dogs to talk to you at night, when they are really vocal. dont go into the field with a howler without practice, they will peg you for sure.

2. I like to use the howler, then wait for three minutes or so and start squealing with the rabbit squaller. Does real well.

3. Use something that Ky-yi's, to imitate a hurt pup. Very effective for rabbit call shy dogs.

4. get a DVD of Randy Anderson. Many good callers are out there and all of them are much better than me, but he is my favorite. Uses many different types of calls to bring em in. Listen very carefully to the types of sounds he makes. Try to emulate the sounds, see how it effects dogs in your area.

Another point to consider is that yotes will become attuned to hearing the same electronic call, especially if it is popular and widely used in your area. One way that some people get around this is to use a combo of manual and electronic calls to bring them in. For instance using the electronic howl/ki-yi in conjunction with several manual squealers....

Last fall my son and I were out deer calling and I was useing the grunt tube with the sound of the fawn. We were in the woods not in the open and watching for adeer to come and all of a sudden there was a coyote .Must have come to the call .We didn't get a shot .Maybe give the fawn distress call a try I think i'M going to try calling coyotes this year for the first time .I'll be trying every thing I can think of .I have a rabbit distress call and I'm going to work it hard I saw on the fourms that that call works good .

In areas where there are many deer, a fawn call works great. I have seen them used both in the rolling hills (Mulie Country) and in the river bottoms. I have never had success, but I know that there is many reasons for that. First and foremost, I am a beginner myself, with only a couple of seasons of experience in my years, and stick to what I do "best" (howlin & rabbit squallin). I also am not very good with my vocalizations, and realize that I prolly sound alot like a 230lb dummy with a call, more so than a fawn bleating for mama!!!!

BC , We have a real good concentration of deer in the area that my son and I hunt , also a good concentration of coyotes . I figure if we can remove a few coyotes the deer will probbably increase to . We were in yesterday with apples to the blinds and fresh coyote droppings along the way .It's not far from his house and he hears them at night all the time . This is the same area that we called that one last year .Might be a good spot to start calling . We can hunt them year round . We have to use the shot gun until the 15 of Oct then the rim fires after that . I guess we are both beginners .Good luck on your hunts . redrider, Do the coyotes come to the turkey call or do U use another call?

I don't intentionally call them in, but the come to the turkey calls

Redrider, I guess then if it sounds like food they come to check out a free meal . I have read articles on calling them and the long howl works best in winter when food is scarce and territory becomes more posessive .They claim that mostly the dominate ones will come to that call.I would guess to defend their territory and breeding rights .We're going to give it a try this fall . One time we were aloud 2 deer and now we're down to one deer with a draw for antleress deer . We're trying to get the moose heard to come back so they introduced the coyote to thin out the deer that is carring the parasite that is killing off the moose They say they didn't introduce them here but they will never convince me of that . One person found a large cage with coyote hair in it .enough evindence for me .I rest my case LOL
