Cows!

Went scouting yesturday south of Pine Vally, there were some deer tracks and cow tracks. Came around a corner saw a little bit of brown got really excited then let down because it was a cow. So here are my questions.

If you are hunting an area and you find a deer among cows can you shoot it? Will deer even be around cows? And are they eating and competing for the same food?

There are a lot of Pine

There are a lot of Pine Valleys out there so what state were you in.

As far as cows the cattle kind and deer they eat different things 99% of the time so there is no competition between the two for food.

I have shot a few deer while they browsed with cattle and usually the cattle just look up and wonder what is going on.  You just have to really make sure of what is going to happen if your arrow or bullet passes through the deer.

If you find deer among cows,

If you find deer among cows, I think you absolutely can shoot it so long as it is a safe shot. Generally, when I have seen cows and deer in the same area, they are not entirely intermixed.  The deer are not necessarily scared off by the cattle, but they do seem to give them space.  As far as deer and cattle competing for food, the answer I have always heard is both yes and no.  No, because deer are browsers that can eat plant material that cattle cannot.  Yes, because deer, like all wildlife are opportunistic, trying to get the easiest and best source of nutrition in a given area at any given time.  If a rancher is feeding hay or grain to cattle in a given area, deer will definitely take advantage of any leftovers in the area.  If cattle are grazing pretty hard in a given area, the deer will likely be found where there is more abundant food elsewhere.

Hope that helps, and good luck on your hunt.

@ Critter..... Local guy

@ Critter.....lol

Wink

Local guy with me out here.  As he said, it's the name of a town out here in the mountains just east of San Diego.

Parker, no laws against it.  As was said, just be safe.  I have seen some deer around here mixed in with cattle, but not usually.  Were you on that patch of land to the north of town, way back in there, or near Guatay?  Nice area up over the hill from Guatay, if you haven't checked it out.  Sort of borders the state park, which we can't hunt, so there is a good deer population.

11 days... Can't wait!!!!!!  I'll be hitting Palomar first, then maybe Laguna later. Thumbs up

South

I went south of Pine Valley towards the 8 freeway I stoped once I got to the bridge. It was getting dark.

I have scouting areas where I think there are less people. Away from Eagle Peak Rd and Boulder Creek Rd.I went back to where I saw a buck a couple of weeks a go and put out my trail cam. Have you check your traill cam again yet?

No, I actually took it out of

No, I actually took it out of the woods after the first 2 weeks it was in.  It was recent enough, and given the fact that it's near water, I don't think they'll change habits to much.

Problem with my spot is that there are alot of hunters. I would love to be able to get out, hike a mile back in, and find somewhere that does not have any other hunters.  However, It's an hour to my spot, and with a 1 and 5 year old, it's tough to get much time to head out to scout.

But, maybe that's why I have not shot a deer out here in San Diego in about 9-10 years.... lol
