Hunter25, I bet you smoke

Hunter25, I bet you smoke cigarettes while hunting also.  I have a good friend that smokes cigarettes all day long while hunting and sees more deer than anyone I know.  He swears they are curious about it and walk over to find out what it is.

Although, he doesn't elk hunt.  It may be a different story.

I haven't used the waffers

I haven't used the waffers but I have sprayed the elk bomb stuff on my boots and pants for a cover smell. I've used the cow in estrus and the bull pee stuff. Both smell like crap but work great for a cover scent. I think my pants still smell like bull pee evn after washing them about a dozen times. I have done this and went strolling through the woods and doubled back and found elk tracks in my tracks so I guess it may work. I wouldn't spray or open and elk smells in my house. You are one brave sole.

If

I am bowhunting or even muzzleloader hunting and calling elk to me where distance can be 10 yards or less from the animal to me I will then use the cow elk wafers or bomb cover scent. When your that close to an animal pinpointed to your call and coming right at you I think it can help to cover your scent. However, even with these I make sure the wind is still in my favor no matter what. No cover scent or wafer will kill your scent if the wind is blowing from you to them.

If rifle hunting where encounters are likely from 100 yards to more I don't even worry about using stuff like that other then like always hunting with the wind in my favor/face. '

I do use a scent free UV killer washing detergent for all my hunt clothes all the time. I don't want the perfumed scent of regular washing detergent wafting thru the air when I'm hunting and the UV killers help keep your clothes from glowing like a light bulb while hunting.

When lat Oct. rifle hunting your primary focus should be on seeing elk from distance and planning a move or ambushing them. Not worring about calling or having an estrus cow wafer attract them. My view anyway.

I just called the DOW to see

I just called the DOW to see if it's legal. He was stumped, and is going to investigate more. When he calls me back i'll post what he says.

My thinking is...what's the difference if you rub it on a tree and wait for a bull to come around (baiting), or you put it on yourself?

Appreciate the call

But, it's pretty clear from the regs book what 'baiting means' Here is the definition, 'Bait means to put, expose, distribute, or scatter salt, minerals, grain, animal parts or other food as an attraction for big game. Scent sticks that smell like food or illegal for BEARS."

It's not about cover scents ie. estrus or cow wafers. Every bowhunter I've ever seen usually wears one and I've worn one while talking to a DOW officer in plainview. I have no doubt they are 100% legal.

He said since it's for elk,

He said since it's for elk, and it's not a food. It's ok. The same thing couldn't be done for bear hunting as you posted.

It doesn't hurt to make sure. It's bad enough wearing that scent. It would be worse to get a ticket on top of it.

I don't wash my clothes in

I don't wash my clothes in any special scent nuetralizing soap - heck I need to invent a different kind so I can make all kinds of money off of those that do! I wash my clothes in a free and clear detergent that has no dyes or perfume.  I do not use any dryer sheets.  I hang all of my clothes in the garage and not with those clothes in the house.  I then take the tip Arrowflipper came up with and just spray a solution of the scrub and tree pieces soaked in water for a couple of weeks.  I had several elk within 15 to 35 yards of me plus some cows within about 50 yards.

I use this for detergent all

I use this for detergent all the time. No change needed when hunting season comes around.

I use some detergant from

I use some detergant from Hunters specailties. it's lasted 4 seasons now and I still have half a bottle left. The only thing that I use it for is my hunting cloths and camo. As far as the waffers or scents being illegal they shouldn't be. I know they are not in my state. Even for bears. We can't bait for bears however if I wanted to take a t-bone steak and tie it to my pack and walk around with it on me thats not considered baiting here, it says so right in the regs. Scent attrackants are not illegal here either. For deer/elk we can bait but I choose not to.

I don't think the wafers

I don't think the wafers smell like the real thing. (more like chemicals) I do use a little elk piss in a bottle though.

I prefer to use pine, juniper or sage oil depending on the country I'm hunting. They all smell VERY strong and do a great job covering human scent. plus my mom will let me in her house if I smell like a christmas tree instead of an elk urinal

That reminds me of a funny story about elk pee.

My dad and i were in a long line at Wendy's waiting to get a burger after a long day elk hunting. I caught a wiff of elk pee and was getting funny looks from others in line. Then I felt something wet running down my leg. The dam lid came off the elk piss in my cargo pocket and I was soaked in it. Needless to say that line cleared out pretty fast and I think every dam one of em got there orders to go.
