Well I'm 3 days from the start of the late season archery deer hunt. I can't wait anymore!!! Last weekend I went with my dad on his general season coast elk hunt. We didn't see any elk but I saw 4 very nice blacktails. 2 of which I wish I could have harvested. One was a very wide and tall 3x3, he stood 15 feet from me for about 25 seconds before he took off. the other was at 40 yards and he was a very tall 4x4. I would have been happy with either of them. I think they just know when you can hunt them and when you can't. If it was deer season there would be no way they would have stuck around for so long. Anyways the weather is turning nasty. We have a big weather system pushing hrough right now then the temps are going to drop into the 20's for the weekend in the mountains with a fresh 2-3 feet of snow. That should get the deer down to where I hunt in the late season. With all of the deer I have already seen I'm really looking forward to the hunt and have a great feeling about this season.
Good luck with your hunt and hopefully it works out as well as you expect it to. Your right about all the animals seeming to know what tags you have. We saw quite a few elk in second season when my kids didn't have the tags but in the first and now the fourth season not so much. So far this fourth season we have seen some great bucks but not one elk to be found. We don't have any deer tags but it's still great to watch them especially when they are going into the rut like they are now.

Which unit did you see those deer? I was up in the Trask area for first season Elk and ran into a very nice 3 pt. on Ginger Cr. road not to far from Meadow Lake rd.
It was the first time we have ever hunted over on the coast. We were in the Trask unit. I'm not too familiar with the area but I think we were on Humbere ridge? The first deer was on a little side spur off the main road where we ended up camping. the next was on an atv trail we were walking down. I normally hunt over in eastern oregon so the very steep and THICK vegitation was new to us. How did your elk hunt turn out? We heard of only a few elk being shot. A few people we talked to said it was a strange year for the first season this year. We saw fresh elk sign everywhere but no elk.

I have a write up and a few pics of my hunt over in the elk section. I didn't get anything this year but ran into a couple of poached elk. A cow and a calf. There are a lot of Elk over in that area, it's all a matter of figureing out where they are at when you get there. I'm not familiar with the road you mentioned. I usually head up there from Carlton on Meadow Lake rd and take Ginger Cr. up to the east fork area. I saw some good deer sign up around Bark Shanty and the North fork. And the one deer I saw was on Ginger Cr. road. Good luck to you!!
Best of luck top you Numb! I know you have been putting your time in scouting for these guys, so it will be a well deserved trophy WHEN you get one. I have no doubt that you will have a chance at a deer, so as long as you can shoot straight

Good luck! Been a lot of years since I've hunted the coast range or even the valley. I really don't miss the brush or the rain or the hunidity. But have been thinging I'd do that next year if only to go visit some old places up around Valsetz and Blackrock.
