Confessions of a Crossbow Convert (feature article)

And from which season would you take to create the crossbow season? No on wants to give up any of their seasons so where do you put the crossbow season.

Again, as I said before there is no reason that crossbow hunters, stickbow hunters and compound bow hunters can't coexist. There isn't a safety issue otherwise allowing handicap persons to use the crossbow during archery season would be creating an unsafe condition.

As I think about this issue, I can think of a reason to allow crossbow hunters in the archery season. Here in KS there is always talk about aking from our season so the more hunters that hunt during the archery season the more voices in opposition.

At the rate we're going with this discussion we'll still be discussing it well into bow season.

It isn't the choice of weapon that is in question. It's the system and the idea that each method needs a special interest.
When I was younger these situations didn't exist. At least not in the extremes that they do now.
I enjoy and participate in several methods of hunting. I use a firearm every bit as much as I do a bow. In fact, I use a variety of weapon types for all of the game animals that don't require a specific weapon choice upon purchase of the tag.
There was a time when you purchased a tag and hunted the season and area that suited you best. You didn't need 400 sq. inches of hunter orange and a license and tags were 12 dollars. There was plenty of room for everyone. Those days are gone. Now we have to choose and make the best of it. The system just may need some more work.

It seems to me the special interest happens when bow hunters try to exclude crossbows hunters from an archery season....

That's right. If we need to have seasons for weapon choice, then. If it can be cocked it shouldn't be in the general archery season.
Muzzleloader probably don't want the crossbows either. They have their own problems with the new inline scoped front loaders that can shoot beyond 200 yds. They've had discussions on splitting their already short season.
Where are the crossbows going to settle in at. They don't allow them in Washington except with special permit. Which allows a person to hunt that would otherwise not be able to.
No doubt it's a fine hunting weapon but it doesn't belong in the general archery season.
There has been discussion of starting a primitive weapon season.
All in all the whole system is a bit of a joke. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. The game depts. are trying to satisfy everyone and meet the dollar quotas that are required to operate. Maybe it's the game depts. that need rewiring. Their circuits may be getting crossed or maybe it's about special interest.
Crossbow hunters need to get their own gig. If it can be cocked it needs to be in a season other than general archery.

In Ontario, we share the archery season. Crossbow, compound, longbow, and recurve hunters all get to hunt in the same 3 month long season. I've never heard a complaint about it. It works just fine.

Success rates are essentially the same. People just use what they are comfortable with and take pride in their chosen weapons. No one is better than the other, just different.

If there needs to be seasons for weapon types then. If it is cocked. It needs to be in a season other than archery.
There was a time when you bought a license and tags and went hunting. As we all know. Those days no longer exist.
I personally don't care what weapon a hunter uses. If it works for them and it's humane. Go for it.
If you really want to get technical. In the archery regulations. There are some regs that are questionable.
All verticle bows have a minimum draw weight requirement of 45 lbs, give or take 5 lbs. From what I understand. The minimum for a crossbow is much higher
All verticle bows have a minimum arrow length requirement. A crossbow uses a much shorter bolt.
A verticle bow can not have a system that locks the string in firing position. A crossbow is cocked and locked ready to shoot with the squeeze of a trigger.
The only similarity is that both have a string and a bow.

Saying a crossbow is like a verticle bow is saying a catapult is like a slingshot.

There are some areas, in this country, that consider a front loader with a rifled barrel, an inline cap, a conical saboted projectile and a scope the same weapon as a smoothbore side lock with a flint ignition, round ball and a bead sight. What wrong with this picture.

I don't want this to happen with general archery, at least, not where I hunt.

You crossbow boys need to get your own ---- together.

Just Noticed Something Funny

Hey FuzzyBear - You're the moderator of this forum and it is the archery forum correct? So how come it is the:

Archery - Modern
Compounds, Crossbows and Hybrid Recurves

Shouldn't there be a separate section for crossbows? Think Big smile
