Combination guns

I was wondering if anyone else uses a combination rifle/shotgun for big game hunting. I've always held an interest in such guns, whether in drilling, S/S or O/U form. My combination is a 12ga over .308 made by Tikka (model 412S). It's been a while since I've had it in the woods and hunting, but I'm thinking it's time to fix that. A hog hunt next month might be just the ticket with a slug chambered above a 180gr Grand Slam.

I'm interested in hearing what you might be using or something you've used before and your ideas and thoughts on combination guns.

Thanks.

Combination gun

I have not used the bigger caliber ones on big game, but we use to use them for predator hunting back when I was a kid. I believe one was a O/U .222-.410 and the other was a .223-.20 gauge. They were great for calling in predators for close and extended range shots with the same weapon.

If I recall my uncle and cousin were calling one morning and a coyote came screaming in and caught my cousin off gaurd he ended up pulling the trigger on the .410 and the coyote literally landed in his lap. He was only around 9 years old. Yes

Very cool weapons and I wish I still had one. Thumbs up

I love it!

My Cape Gun (combination side by side) is 1890 vintage 9.3x57R (think 38-55 but just a little bigger in all measurements) and 12 gauge.  I carried it in the field for the first time this year but have yet to shoot at game with it.  It seems just about ideal for those times when partridge and deer seasons over lap!

Very cool gun Mike. For the record the 9.3x57 is a good round, but smaller than a 38-55 or .375 Win (nearly identical rounds) being a .366 cal vs .375. Power-wise it's closest, perhaps, to our .358 Win, one of my favorite woods calibers. I also own a 9.3x62 which is a bit more powerful than the 9.3x57 (logical) and which is closest to our better know .35 Whelen, one of my very favorite cartridges. The 9.3x57 may not be as well known or as powerful as the bigger 62mm version, but it's a very fine round.  Thumbs up

If that were my rifle, I'd want to use it hunting black bears over bait shooting any of the 250-285gr 9.3mm bullets out there. I'd throw a Brenneke 1 oz slug in the SG barrel and wait for mr bear to appear, knowing I had his number, without any doubt!  Yes One of the rifles I took on my bear hunt this year actually was one of my .358s shooting 250 Grand Slam loads. There's fine 250gr bullet made by Swift for the 9.3 called the A-Frame. This is the bullet I'd use in my 9.3 for big game.

Thanks for showing us that neat rifle!
